Gday folks!

So I managed to get a brand new SSD (HyperX Savage) from a friend for free. It works great but for one thing... It makes noise. It sounds like a HDD clicking so I took the cover off to see if it was a scam but it was your everyday solid state circuit board. I don't have a HDD in my laptop so I tried it in there but same issue. Is there such thing as coil whine for SSD's?

Thanks!

can't be possible as ssds have no moving parts.

Solid state devices make electrical noise, and in this case, that could be what he's hearing. Though it shouldn't be super audible, which may imply that something is up with the SSD.

That's what I said. I opened it to check for a scam SSD, tried it in a laptop without a HDD and tried powering it on with no devices on around me. I think it might just be coil whine?

Could it be a cable hitting a fan when you messed around in there putting the ssd in?

I said that I installed it in my laptop. Either way, in my PC I only have two fans which is my CPU and rear exhaust which are no where near my cables.

Hey there :)

There is such thing as coil whining on SSDs and it usually isn't a good thing. If you have tried other PSUs to make sure bad power isn't causing this the drive may be malfunctioning. I'd run some tests including diagnostic tools from the manufacturer and possibly contact the manufacturer's support for some advice. The guys there should know if this is a known issue and if it can lead to data loss or if it's not a fatal thing. The best thing would be to replace the drive if it's still under warranty.
