If you agree with me, I don't really need to ask for your opinion. Chances are you have the same opinion or conclusion as me.

If you disagree with me and all you did to express that was a button, then I won't ever figure out what your viewpoint is and I can't use it to temper what I believe. A disagree button isn't criticism, it's coping out of explaining yourself.

And some people who get down voted to hell may actually have a valid point but the majority decided their point wasn't. When it comes to having a discussion, democracy is not a good thing.

1 sometimes a downvote is enough.

2 when it's not painfully obvious why people are downvoting others, the smarter ones will ALSO reply.

Your third paragraph actually has a valid point. However, it all depends on circumstance and the people involved. If everyone disagrees with someone I think the mass of dislikes are the least of that person's worries. They are probably also going to get flooded with replies all saying the same thing. UNLESS the community takes a hint and once there are already a few replies stating why the general community doesn't like an idea, they just starts leaving a dislike to show that they agree with said replies instead of writing more in vain.

I think my arguments are pretty strong. However, if they are going to be debunked, I think it will happen in your third paragraph.

The other thing is once you've been here long enough to pick up on the general consensus, you start writing your posts in such a way to avoid down votes. Or even avoid posting altogether.

I had this problem, and it was part of the reason I left the last place I was at.

Take a look at this website. There's a reason that they decided against downvoting, and because it's most common use is abuse. I think it's fine the way it is: If you disagree with something someone says on a factual basis, write a response or ignore. If you disagree on a subjective basis, write a response or ignore. That's what forums are for and that's what spurs discussion.

Adding emotions might not be a bad idea, but traditionally "downvotes" most common use is to abuse whatever system is in place.

It was decided that it doesn't make sense for several reasons.  Although it wasn't this:

Overall, it came down to bullying or something. Basically people can't take shit in 2016 and we can have no dislike button because of peoples feelings.

If that was our concern we would shut down the forum completely and call it a day ;)

No, for one, it's because of this:

Agreeing with someone is easy. If you disagree with someone I feel like you should actually say why you disagree with someone and a push of a button won't do that very well.

If you disagree, reply back.  Start a conversation - a discussion.  That's the purpose of a forum.  If we just downvote people and move on, that doesn't help anyone.

Furthermore, it counts all rep on your profile.  Keeping track of how often someone's been disagreed with doesn't hold any real value.  Best case scenario, it's meaningless since they might just have unpopular (but maybe correct) ideas.  Worst case scenario, it serves as a way to just unnecessary negativity to the forum.
