So, i was removing my gpu to send away for a replacement , whilst talking with the guy on the phone and having never removed one before he failed to mention the clip on the pcie slot, it snapped off, all in one piece, i took the card out the piece connected to the slot fine but no longer clicks into place, is this a write off or will i be able to fit the new card without any issues, please help

What PSU? A 390 is a better choice than a 970 and a 480 will be better in the future.

the gpu is faulty, by replacement i meant direct replacement, as in another strix, back to the problem at hand, will i experience any issues because of the 1cm sized plastic retention clip no longer clicking into place

Don't worry about it. The card won't magically pop out during gaming but when shipping it will be loose. Make sure you properly screw it in and it will be fine.
