Ok, so recently my friend purchased an Acer GN246hl when he goes to select 144hz in Customize your display (windows 10) advanced, Display adapter properties the only option he has is 60hz. He is using a dual link DVI cable and his GPU is an XFX RADEON Double D R9 280x. Any ideas what might be causing this any help is appreciated!

DVI only supports up to 60hz at 2160x1600 resolution. Just use hdmi, which supports 144hz at 1080p.

This monitor is 1920×1080, and Dual-Link DVI supports that at up to 144 Hz.

HDMI can only do 60hz (except for HDMI 1.3 which can do 120hz at 1080p. dual link dvi-d can do 144hz, your friend is probably using single link dvi.

Not only has he tried both ports but on display settings, it says dvi-d for the monitor.

Did he set it to 144hz in the Radeon settings? I remember seeing refresh rate options on my old R9 280 I think it is under Desktop properties but there is custom resolutions too where you can set the refresh rate after clicking a warning message.

Well, before he tries anything else just make sure it's connected to the bottom port (the one that's in the same row as the other ports, not the one on its own row). If it's going to work at all, it will have to be from that port.
