does this setup folds effectively?

Go to solution Solved by Whaler_99,

Ok that is very helpful to me.If that is the case i will just remove the GeForce 315 Altogether, one less power sucking and heat creating device on my server.

Just asking is a xigmatek Gaia or Hyper 212X enough for the 4820K to not burn out by all the folding work?Or should I get a seidon 240M/Nuctua NH-D14 instead? Also is a Rampage IV Formula/Extreme/Black Edition going have good enough VRMs for this? There are no workstation nor server motherboard available in my country, and i am afraid getting a consumer motherboard will be too much for it to handle(folding all day long)...

That motherboard will be fine - just don't overclock the CPU and no worries. Make sure you have some decent intake and exhaust fans so you can ensure a good flow of air through your case. As for the cooler, the 212x folding 7/24 may be pushing it a bit. I would say if getting something new, get the Noctua - will easily handle the temps and be very quiet doing it. Don't liquid cool this on a AiO. I am not to sure how they are rated for 7/24 max usage. I melted 2 XSPC reservoirs on my custom loop folding 7/24. I would assume any AiO would be of even less quality.

So,i am going to build a home windows server 2012 essentials domain controller for personal use,and it will have a 4820K on it. I have a GeForce 315(OEM) taken from some gateway sx2850 to be put in that server. The question is, should I consider running folding at all? It is not going to do much good right? I was thinking since it is going to be idle most of the time why not use it for something useful? But can the GeForce 315 handle it in the first place?

Thanks for any suggestions given.

if you are going to be using it as a server i would not recomend folding on cpu but i would fold on the gpu

So the GPU will fold better than the CPU?

GeForce 315...48 cuda cores...shouldn't do much right?

It is only serving at most 8 clients(in total, not at a time, most of the time it will not be serving only 2, so it should be fine.), so it should not hog up the CPU resources.

Only as active directory domain controller, no other jobs like web server or something lime that.

no i did not say that but if you do something with it you would first have to stop the folding (on the cpu) or its going to be slow like sht and its no fun enableing and disableling it all the time you want to do something on your server

If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough it will be believed.

Ya, you won't fold on the GPU - so just delete the slot if FAH happens to make one for it. For the CPU - just fold at Medium on all cores. So - when using the server, should be perfect. Have a screen saver set to come on after say 5 minutes. Then folding will ram up to 100%.

A domain controller does use some CPU but more disk and ram then anything. Esp for a home environment, where there is zero replication and hardly any changes, will be fine.

you melted your reservoirs?!?!?! how the hell did you manage that?!

aren't the reservoirs usually in the loop after the rad? and on another note, if something in your case was hot enoguh to melt plastic, then wouldn't your cpu or mobo fry first? I mean, silicon dies usually can't handle anything over ~100c at the most!!

In a custom loop, the order things are in doesn't matter. Turns out, the glue used in most acrylic res is only rate to about 50C. I was folding with a 3570k OC and two 6870 units, which kept my water at about 55-58C. So, the glue gave way and started leaking. Also, one of them suffered from a recent flaw XSPC released and have fixed in v2. That is why I am now using an aqualis res - derylin base and top, 5mm thick glass res walls. :)
