The new RMx/RMi series are better than the older RM series. You will be fine with 850W for SLI on X99 platform although if you want some extra headroom then go with the 1000W version.

The motherboards on the X99 platform are more expensive than Skylake Z170 so you might not have a lot of options in that price range.

So the only thing you have bought is the ram ? What else do you need apart from the tower (Monitor, peripherals etc) ? And what is your remaining budget ?

Yes all i have is the ram (for now), but i can always change it. I already have the peripherals (except for the keyboard) and i have 3 1080p monitors that are pretty old but still work. I am not planning sli for the time being (due to gtx 1080's power by itself).

The budget is not really set, I will keep working until i can afford the remaining parts. However, i would still like to keep prices reasonable.

Also, i am not spending much if any money on a case (ill use an eatx case from a junk yard if i have to). i am looking for functionality rather that looks.

Peripherals:

Mouse - Mad Catz: R.A.T. 7 laser mouse

Keyboard - some membrane keybpard i took from my schools garbage (dont judge me)

Monitor - 2 60 Hz side monitors ( ill find resolution later) and 1 slightly larger 60 hz Monitor (1920 X 1080 )

I am looking for a cheap(ish) mechanical keyboard with either blue or black switches

the reason i am looking for 2011-v3 socketed processor is due to the the more cores generally in them. I am starting a youtube channel and need to record and render video while gaming and streaming while also on teamspeak.

Gaming PC:                                        Server PC:                                         Streaming PC:

Processors:        i9-10900k                                          i5-9600k                                             i7-5820k

Motherboards:    ASUS ROG STRIX Z490-E               ASUS ROG STRIX Z390-E                ASUS ROG STRIX X99

RAM:                  Gskill TridentZ 32 GB @3500mhz    Gskill TridentZ 32 GB @3500mhz      Gskill TridentZ 32 GB @3500mhz

GPU:                  MSI RTX 3080ti                                 Asus ROG 1050ti                               Asus ROG 1060 OC

SSD:                  Samsung 980 Pro                             Samsung 960 Evo                              Samsung 960 Evo

These two boards are both within your $200 upper limit:

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/xPnG3C/msi-motherboard-x99araider

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/rRGj4D/asus-motherboard-x99ausb31

I would go with the i7 5820K over the i7 5930K as you won't need the extra pcie lanes.

You should be more than fine with 16GB (4 x 4GB) ram. If you do want 32GB though then I would look at a cheaper 4 x 8GB kit. You can get 32GB of DDR4 2400MHz for around $130 on pcpartpicker.

For a water cooler I would suggest a 280mm AIO such as the Corsair H110i GT or NZXT X61 but you would need to check if the case is compatible.

EVGA G2, Corsair RMx/RMi, XFX XTR, CoolerMaster V and Seasonic are all good for your psu needs.

I personally prefer Gigabyte, MSI and EVGA for Nvidia gpu's. If you are only going to game on a single 60Hz screen though then a GTX 1080 is not worth it. Ideally you want a 1440p G-Sync or 4K to stretch it's legs. It will do a good job at 4K although you might have to lower settings on some games to get the desired framerates.

For the SSD I would look at the Samsung 850 EVO.

You'd be fine powering three 1080s on a 1000W PSU. Grab an 850W if you want to SLI them. Also, the new Corsair RMi is a better PSU than the old RM.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

  • 4 weeks later...

Sorry I have not been on lately - been at a summer camp and have had no time to hop on my current potato.

Thanks for he info on a power supply.

what sized power supply could I get away with with the goal setup?

and what's the cost - benefit ratio on a RMi vs rm?

Thank you SO MUCH for this info. It will help me SIGNIFICANTLY with this build.

the 60Hz monitor is temporary as is a big p.o.s.

I am trying to find a 1080p or 1440p limits for a responsible price.

also, will a single 1080 easily deal with 3 1080 or 1440p monitors?
