I built a budget pc 2 months ago

i5 4460

Gigabyte g1 gaming gtx 970

arsock h81m-dgs r2.0

So I had this old ide hard drive in a laptop that doesnt work anymore. Yesterday I bought an enclosure for it just so I could see what was on it and as soon as I plugged it into my PC via usb my computer turned off and wouldn't turn back on. I tried reseating everything and clearing cmos... Still wouldn't turn on. I verified it isn't a psu or gpu failure so I'm guessing its either mobo or cpu. There's probably something wrong with the enclosure which lead to ?electrocuting? the mobo. Can anybody confirm this or is there something I forgot? Any help is appreciated.

Might be the motherboard. Did you plug the enclosure in the front panel USB?

If so, try unplugging the front panel completely (including the buttons and LED).

It's a homemade case (wood) and I don't have anything on the front panel except the power button.

You could well have shorted the mobo out via the USB port, it sounds stupid but is very easy to do.. I once did it to a laptop I owned by accidentally touching a plugged in iPhone 5 charger to the port, instantly cooked it!

If you have a spare motherboard banging around or if a friend has one then use it to test your CPU, but it would shock me if the CPU died from that!

All the best and hope figure out your problem soon!

I went to an IT guy with spare motherboards and he let me test my stuff. Turns out its a dead motherboard and for some reason keyboard. My mouse is a g502 spectrume so thank god it survived. As for the keyboard I wanted to change it anyway. Thank you for your time and help.
