Hello there, I want to build my first gaming PC and I'd like to get some tips/suggestions if needed.

I will use the 5 questions stated in the guide for posting build plan threads.

1. Budget & Location

I live in Europe (the Netherlands to be specific) and I have a budget ceiling of €1,200. I do not want to go over it unless it offers me a big boost.

2. Aim

I want to use it as a gaming PC and regular use PC. I want to play CS:GO with it and I am planning to play other games like GTA V, CoD and Battlefield, maybe I'll try out Far Cry 3 too sometime.

3. Monitors

I am planning to run one monitor at 1080p resolution, the exact model is also stated in the list below.

4. Peripherals

I already have a Razer Deathadder Chroma but I still need to buy a keyboard and my operating system.

5. Why are you upgrading?

I have an early 2009 iMac right now and it can't even run CS:GO properly so I want an upgrade and I'm also moving to Windows, I have to get used to it though because I have never used Windows on a daily basis. My aim for this PC build is also to be able to run most high end graphic games right now with at least 60fps on 1080p at high/very high settings.

Now on to the setup itself! I have a list here of all the components I want to buy and also the price of them.

CPU: Intel Core i5 6600K -- € 255.90 --> Intel Core i5 6500 -- € 201.90

GPU: Sapphire Radeon RX 480 8GB -- € 286.44 --> I will wait for a non-reference to be released or maybe the GTX 1060 if that is a better choice. I can spend € 47.64 / € 77.54 extra on the GPU if needed

Motherboard: MSI H110M Pro-VD -- € 59.90

Memory: Crucial 16GB DDR4-2133 CL15 kit -- € 59.99 --> Crucial 8GB DDR4-2133 CL15 -- € 36.91

Power Supply: Corsair CX550M (550W) -- € 72.90 --> Be quiet! Straight Power 10 500W CM -- € 99.90

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 412S -- € 39.91 --> Cooler Master Hyper T4 -- € 29.90 / Maybe remove?

Storage: Crucial BX200 240GB (SSD) -- € 69.85

Optical Drive: Samsung SH-224FB -- € 18.90 --> Removed

Case: Sharkoon VG5-W Blue -- € 42.89 --> Fractal Design Define R5 Titanium -- € 108.90

Monitor: Iiyama ProLite GE2488HS-B1 -- € 159.-

Operating System: Windows 10 -- € 39.49

Keyboard: Sharkoon Skiller Pro+ -- € 39.49

Webcam: Trust SpotLight Webcam Pro -- € 20.68

Price Total: € 1,165.74 --> € 1,152.36 OR € 1,122.46 (depends on stock/aftermarket cooler choice)

So, is this setup good enough for my needs? I hope I didn't combine any parts that don't fit together well. Feel free to tell me if there is something wrong with my setup, or if I should swap a component with a different (maybe cheaper) one which may leave me with some spare money that I can use to upgrade other parts.

don't get an i5 6600k with a h110 board, you won't be able to overclock. everything else seems to be fine.

Hey there Hazard_ :) Welcome to the community!

The build generally looks good. My two cents on this:

The CPU is unlocked for overclocking and the custom CPU cooler indicates that you are willing to OC the CPU. For that you would need a motherboard with a chipset that would allow you this so I'd change that. @SeanAngelo suggested something so I'd consider it.

16GB of memory may be a bit overkill so I'd start with a single 8GB stick and see if it suffices. This can be friendly towards the budget and you can always add another 8GB stick of needed.

I'd reconsider if you really need an optical drive as you can save some additional funds on it. You can always get an external USB one if needed down the road.

Regarding the storage, having a SSD as a boot drive is a really good idea as it would boot the responsiveness and general performance of the system. however, gaming doesn't really rely on the storage's performance for anything else but the loading times so you won't really see any change in the FPS or graphics' quality of you run a game off of a SSD. Some games (MMOs and Open World games) may have their surrounding textures load faster or smoother but that won't really affect your FPS nor the quality of those textures.

Post back if you have any questions!

1. cpu mobo combo is not gd. either go with unlocked CPU and z170 board or locked CPU with h110/h170/b150. I would suggest the latter since it saves money.

2. optical drive is not really needed imo unless you have some specific use.

3. Make sure the PSU u choose is a gray sticker one NOT the green ones, green ones are shiit.

4. Dont buy the reference rx480 since the power issue. even tho AMD promiss to fix this over a new driver I would say its safer to get a after market one with 8pin or even duo 6 pin.

5. I would stick with tat 16 gb ram

Yes I am planning to get a 1tb hdd later on. But not yet, if I run out of storage I will buy one.

I didn't really intend to overclock my CPU, as I'm not familiar with it and I do not want to risk doing something wrong. Also, an overclocked CPU doesn't boost your gaming performance much, if I am correctly. I chose the custom CPU cooler because I care to have a quiet PC. So should I then just stick with the motherboard and use a core i5 6600?

yes, but get an i5 6500, the 6600 non-k isn't worth extra money you pay for 100mhz. also, that 412s seems excessive for a silent heatsink, maybe something like a hyper t4/gammaxx 200?

Do you mean that the 412s is overpriced? I can get the hyper t4 for € 30.-, so € 10.- cheaper.

no, its that its overkill for a heatsink with a non-k cpu, even if its for silence. the hyper t4 should do just as well for keeping the cpu cool and silent.

Yes, that CPU should be fine and be more friendly towards your budget.

The stock cooler should do the job and keep a relatively quiet system. You can try that and if needed add the aftermarket CPU cooler. :)

I'm not sure about this specific case

I have another model from the same manufacturer (the sharkoon vg4-w) and I think it is a horrible case. The PSU filter is annoying, the front filter is non removable. The same I'd for the front led fan. It only has 2 fan mounts (one non-removable) anyways ilk try with a build for you

I changed some stuff in my original post, you should take a look ;)

I am used to an iMac and mine is very quiet. You can hear it in a quiet room, but not loudly at all. That's why I changed the PSU and case to ones that should be more silent. I am not sure if I still need the CM Hyper T4.

I decided to change the case to another one, the Define R5, this one looks a bit less cool I think but it should be very silent. I think cable management with this case will be easier to do too. Btw you can mount 7(!) extra case fans in addition to the 2 case fans already installed!

Do post a log of the building process so we can check out the ready project and some feedback on how it's performing!

Yes I will surely do :D, but I am still saving up the money right now and I calculated that by the end of August I will probably be able to build the PC. I'll make a separate build log thread and link it in this thread then.

I only am wondering right now if the CM Hyper T4 cooler is an overkill over the stock cooler with this setup and the silent case, going for a quiet system. Any opinions?

misschien is dit ook wel een goede build:

https://azerty.nl/winkelmandje/winkelmandje/?legen=1&product[717161]=1&product[452185]=1&product[926893]=1&product[837548]=1&product[844308]=1&product[912163]=1&product[669161]=1&product[826305]=1&product[827896]=1

Unfortunately, as a Western Digital representative I can't really recommend a specific one. IMHO if you are not doing any OCing the stock cooler should suffice and shouldn't contribute much to the noise levels, but if you do want an aftermarket cooler you should be checking the noise ratings of the different coolers. The lower the RPM and the larger the fan, the more quite the cooler should be.

  • 2 months later...

Hello there!

Everyone has probably already forgotten about this topic, but I certainly haven't!

I have been saving money for almost 2 months and now I've finally be able to buy all the parts I want.

I'm gonna build the PC next week and I'll probably make a separate build log thread for that.

I will show some pictures now to give you a taste of what the build will be like ^^

See ya!

Hey, glad you got the parts!

Do post a build log with photos and some feedback on how the system is performing.

Be careful with the thermal paste and the CPU installation as well as all other connections.

Feel free to ask if there are any questions regarding the building process! :)
