EDIT:

Re-reading this thread... so is it totally useless to get a 6700K over a 4670k for gaming? I won't see any performance upgrade at all? Or very minimal? Not just arma 3, but in general. Should I upgrade or keep my CPU?

I'm getting new build and people were recommending me skylake but I see most motherboards out on the market are mostly X99 chipset so is there any major improovment in the i7 6700k vs i7 5820k. My main goal is really for Arma 3 here where I believe is a CPU intensive game. And noticing the 5820k is more expensive. So what's the deal with these 2? I have not followed the CPU tech till I got my 4670k so I really not sure what's up with the 2 new gens.

Being honest, neither skylake nor broadwell-e will provide much of an improvement over your current 4670k. Unless, that is, if you're using the Adobe suite extensively: In which case, broadwell-e may provide helpful with its more cores. Otherwise, I would just stick to the z97 platform for now.

Edit: Upon googling, arma only uses 4 cores, so there wouldn't be much of a benefit getting a new CPU.

General opinion: If you 90% game, i7 6700k. If you do a lot of video editing, i7 5820k.

The i7 6700k performs better in most games.

Really? I currently get around 25 to 35 FPS depending on how long the game has been running in a specefic arma 3 mode. I have a GTX 770 and a i5 4670k and getting a GTX 1070 and i7 6700k won't do much? That's dispointing...

a 1070 might help, but Intel haven't been advancing their per-core performance on their CPU's much lately.

It might not be a CPU bottleneck then?

Well I honnestly don't know. I always played arma 3 with normal graphics and like 3 weeks ago noticed my GPU only hit around 50% utilization. So I set my graphics to high and it hits a nice 99%. The CPU has always hit top range utilization no matter what graphics option so I'm pretty sure my CPU bottlenecks.

What's the OC like? Is Arma 3 multithreaded?

So... is there a way I can hit above 100 FPS in arma 3? I'm pretty sure I see some people who are always at least 60 FPS + .  I don't think GPU is the bottleneck for me... hmmm

On my CPU? I'm at 4.2 ghz. Don't think there is multithread. Reading this, someone says the best single thread CPU is 4790k. Oh my god CPU selection is so complicated compared to GPUs now. Damn.

Arma 3 uses up to four threads. That being said the CPU with the highest clock rate will give you the best performance since it will be 4 high clock rate threads. The 4670K and 4790K have near identical single core performance at the same clock speed.

And how does compare to a 6700k? It's only 10$ more expensive compared to a 4790k.

So tthe 4790k would be the ultimate best CPU?

Just looked at the Arma Reddit, it's most likely a GPU bottleneck. It's 980 or 780Ti for 1080p ultra 60FPS.

At most like 10%. Your GPU could probably use more of an upgrade than the your CPU though.

Oh ok. So how sounds a 6700k with a gtx 1070? That should do the trick. Getting new MOBO anyway as going from mITX to a define r5.

That was my intended build.
