Hi guys,

Recently bought myself an Z97 sabertooth mark S and I was thinking of doing a CPU upgrade as well (coming from an I7 4770 (non K)). My question is, and tell me it's stupid and a waste of money to buy an I7 4790K or I5 4690K.

Please try and convince me I do not need either as I only game with multitasking and I might overclock.

both are great CPUS they use to be the gamer top 1 go to CPUs until 6600k and 6700k got released.

compared to an I7 4770, is it worth though?

nope, its not really worth it since you're only getting the unlocked feature and a higher base clock speed.

"Sulit" (adj.) something that is worth it

i7 8700K 4.8Ghz delidded / Corsair H100i V2 / Asus Strix Z370-F / G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16GB 3200 / EVGA GTX 1080Ti FTW3 / ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q

Samsung 850 EVO 500GB & 250GB - Crucial MX300 M.2 525GB / Fractal Design Define S / Corsair K70 MX Reds / Logitech G502 / Beyerdynamic DT770 250Ohm

SMSL SD793II AMP/DAC - Schiit Magni 3 / PCPP

Old Rig

i5 2500k 4.5Ghz | Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3P | Zotac GTX 980 AMP! Extreme | Crucial Ballistix Tactical 16GB 1866MHz

The  I7 4790K I have is a much better processor compared to the i7-4770K that I also own, never mind the i7-4770. The problem with the i7-4770K is the poor TIM, which means the i7-4770K throttles much earlier than it should when overclocked. The i7-4790K that I have is a great Overclocker (That could just be that I won the Silicon Lottery though).

However is it worth upgrading from an i7-4770 to an i7-4790K?
Probably not if you:

(A)  Are not going to sell your i7-4770 and get a good price for it.

(B). If your only use is Gaming. You will only likely see a few FPS performance increase in most games.

Definetely don't switch to i5. I don't think I need to explain that. The only thing you are getting is OC capabilities and that isn't going to be worth it unless you sell your old cpu for good money and have a h110i/X61

If i somehow manage to sell it for $250, should i go for it? (AUD BTW)

If you really, really want to play with Overclocking your CPU, and the price differential is correct for you then ... I think the i7-4790K would be the best upgrade for you.

Make sure you buy a Corsair H100i Watercooler or better if you are going to Overclock. Its the best  and quickest way to watercool your system and the performance is pretty close to fancy plumbing watercooling systems.

I look forward to seeing your 3DMark Firestrike Results on your overclocked system.

Good Luck!

The 4770 has hyper-threading, which makes a pretty big difference in CPU intensive games and programs.

Great point.

With Windows 10 DX12 (Ashes of Singularity for one) and Windows 7/8.1/10 -  Vulkan (DOTA2, DOOM) games coming out having more threads should help gaming performance lots.

99.999% of video games do not use hyper threading.

Then why do you get lower frame rates with an i5? Many games can utilize 8 threads, and you wont have as many fps drops with hyper-threading. GTA V for example uses all 8 threads.

Thats because for example 6600k and 6700k, the 6700k is flat out faster then the 6600k.

Put that pirce tag difference to a GPU and u get 5x more performance then you would form having an I7 over i5
