Overclocking an e8400,Can I/should I push it further?

I am trying to play with an OC an e8400,cooling it with a CM Hyper TX3,on an ASUS p5q turbo.

I followed something i saw on tomshardware,i set the ratio to 9,the FSB to 400,and the voltage to 1.325v for 3.6ghz, if it helps stock voltage was about 1.18v,also i have done nothing yet to my 800mhz ddr2 ram.

I have been running prime95 blend test for about 10 minutes and it has topped out at about 75c.

Do you think i could push it to 4Ghz?  Should I?

Plus in a few paychecks want to pick up a xeon quad, and do the 771 to 775 mod.

What motherboard are you using?

Aside from the VRMs exploding, I can't really see the motherboard getting damaged unless you jump the voltage up way to high and way too quickly and end up shorting something out internally.

Either way, I'd say it's highly unlikely. You're going to notice anomalies long before anything explodes.

Oh wow, that's a pretty decent board.

Yeah, I'd say you've got nothing to worry about. Just play it smart, and if you start to notice any anomalies, back off of it.

Make sure your chip isn't throttling though, because 75c is near the max for that chip.

Push it harder, you should be able to get better than 3.6 at that voltage, I would not recommend anything higher than 1.4v for a 24/7 overclock but it seems you have other chips you could toss in if something goes wrong with that. Personally I would pump 1.5v into the thing and see how far the FSB goes before it either hits a wall or the max overclock stable with prime 95. That's the fun part about the E8400, they can take a lot of volts and get some pretty ridiculous overclocks :P

I would also recommend if you are going to push more volts to look into a new cooler, also when you push the FSB it will overclock the RAM, I would see about trying 4Ghz @1.3-1.375v and see if you have any luck.

ok sorry for the late reply i had to get a little sleep.

I ran Cenibench to check for throttling.

@ 3.6ghz/1.325v i got a score of 190

@ 4.0ghz/1.375v i got a score of 202

But i need to up the voltage due to errors in prime 95 in under a minute.

Yea 4Ghz should be a nice clock and even if the chip is hitting 80c under full load you'll be fine

Ok 1.4v is stable but it hit 91c in prime 95,and cenibench score of 200.

I don't think i will push any harder right now.

I am going to skim craigslist for coolers, and try to get something beffier before i go higher.

Awesome, yea a nice tower cooler will cool that sucker well or might even be fun with an AIO :P

I use the Hyper T4 all the time on 775 and it does a great job
