Spdif port lighting up, but no audio

Hi,

 

My laptop has three ports, a microphone, a headphone and a spdif/optical out port. The problem is that the spidif port lights up in red, and when I plug a pair of headphones inside the audio port, I get no sound. How can I fix this? I read a bit on google and most people with this problem are on macbooks where the light is showing from the audio port. Some people say that the solution is to take a toothpick and hit some "switch", but I dont know what I am supposed to look for and I feel uncomfortable doing that. 

 

Im not sure if thats even the correct solution. Thats why I wanted to ask here.

Are you plugging headphones into the SPDIF port? That port is only for toslink optical fibre cables, and won't work with anything else. It's intended for connecting to a surround sound system.

 

If you aren't getting sound from the headphone jack, are the relevant drivers installed? My old system had a SPDIF connector that blocked the 3.5mm connectors from being used unless I had realtek drivers installed.

I actually got audio from that port to my headphones, but plugging my headphones into the headphone port gives me no audio

Oh, its a combi jack. Are you sure the other jack is for headphones? If you're running windows, have you got the correct drivers installed (e.g. not the windows default audio drivers)

Yes the other hack is for headphones. Its labelled on the side. I do have the correct drivers installed and they are from realtek. Will reinstalling maybe help?

There shouldn't be a problem then Google your laptop model no. and see if others are having the same problem as you. Re-installing might help though. Go into your playback devices and see how many audio devices show up.

If you see a separate entry for another headphone socket, try setting it as default.

 

When you plug devices into your headphone socket, does a pop-up appear asking you what device you plugged in? My headphones don't work until I acknowledge the popup message.

Thanks for the reply. I reinstalled drivers and everything works perfectly now. However, the spdif port still lights up, regardless if the headphones are in or not. Is this normal?

That's completely normal. There might be an option to turn it off somewhere, but it's nothing to worry about.
