what i3 were you looking at?

Gaming - Ryzen 9800X3D | 64GB 6400mhz cl30 9070 XT

Homelab - many servers...constantly changing.

well im glad you asked, most people on this forum dont actually have the hands on experiance with older hardware so they look at benchmarks and raw numbers on a brochure then say "oh it cant be done." i had an LGA 775 system before and it used to have an q9300 in it and i could only OC to 3.0GHz stable so that CPU was basically useless to me for a budget system. what i did was go on ebay and buy an X5460 Xeon CPU and i did the LGA 771 to 775 Xeon mod on my motherboard, CPU, and BIOS. and i OC'd that Xeon to 4.0GHz i couldve gone much higher but my PSU and RAM were holding me back. at 4.0ghz with a GTX 760 battlefield 4 ran buttery smooth 40-50 FPS on ultra preset at 1080p. fallout 4 50 to 60 FPS on high preset. so yes if you can OC that Xeon then you will get insane price to performance. if you are wondering what happened to my LGA 775 system i ended up selling it as it was just a fun little project PC. and i needed to make room for other projects.

800mhz. i lowered the ram multiplier to the lowest settings in order to raise that FSB to 422mhz and even at that my ram was running beyond its rated speed at 844mhz. recommendation to you is to buy high speed DDR2 Ram if you want to get high ass OCs but honestly just pick up a good kit of ram so the ram doesnt hinder you OC. remember with old skool FSB OCs ram is VERY important and mainly determines how high of an OC you can get.

but even with that aim for 3.8ghz to 4.0ghz OCs, anything higher is just for shits and giggles and for bragging rights. 4.0ghz is blazing fast already.

Does PCIe x16 slow for the GPU as I found a good motherboard with DDR3 just wondering the PCIe speed in games. Might use a GTX 960 or something like that. Thanks

PCIe gen doesnt matter. im running my GTX 760 in a PCie X8 gen 2 slot and i get the same FPS as people running them in PCie X16 gen 3 slots
