That's how I feel right now.

I bought a RX 480 at launch, right after seeing some of the positive reviews. The card ran beautifully in my PC. It looked great. It was indeed very quiet, with great performance at 1080p and with all the eye candy you can get in a game. The benchmarks also checked out. It had everything to be a great, cheap card. And then Powergate happened. :|

I've read and watched many different reviews addressing this issue, and I simply cannot live with that. I cannot take the risk. I'm going back to school and cannot afford to have any of my parts die over the next 5 years because of a possibly faulty card. I've decided to take the card back to the store and wait for the 1060 or other 480 designs with better power solutions.

K. Although, your parts are pretty high quality. The worry was with lower end components, but eh, can't hurt to be safe. Probably would've been a better idea to wait for the Aftermarket designs in the first place.

That may be true, but I did watch the reviews before getting it and did some benchmarks of my own. I had no obvious reason not to get the card at the time. None of the first reviews mentioned the power issue and I didn't follow the Reddit AMA at launch to know about the issue right away. I don't mind waiting a month or two to get a new, better card, but I really feel like AMD lied to me.

You get used to it. They're taking turns, 3.5+0.5 with the 970, the PCIE issue with the 480, Nvidia's turn next. Although, it's still not 100% certain whether they were aware of the problem or not, although, not that unlikely.

I'm aware, but people aren't to keen about having their shiny new toy have a pretty big problem with it.

I heard about that. #powergate i heard that it draws too much voltage from the motherboard or something. Your better off waiting for the AIB RX 480s i think the 1060 is going to be near the end of this year AIB RX 480s are coming in a few weeks.

Well technically speaking the problem is 100% unfixable... But AIB aftermarket models shouldn't have this issue.

1060 announcement launch is next week. Availability might be an issue, but it will be here fairly soon. It is expected to be about 5-15% faster than the 480 but cost closer to 250-300 dollars.

Because of the 6 pin, I understand.  For the reference models I would expect AMD to cap the clock a bit lower so it doesn't hit the 150w ceiling, and of course, no overclocking it what so ever.

But yeah, the aftermarket ones shouldn't have this problem.  So I can understand people wanting to return it.

I don't think 5-15% would put it quite in 980 reach, but not the most knowledgeable on that. And current benchmarks for the 480, last I checked and iirc, have it bouncing between just a hair below the 970, to beating the Nano. I'd say give the 480 3ish weeks for the old AMD spit and polish, if the AIBs end up fixing the problem.

I haven't returned the card yet, will do it this weekend. I'm definitely playing it safe, though. I cannot afford the headache for now. As a couple of you mentioned, I bought some quality parts for my new build, and for that very reason.

I guess I'll be playing Rollercoaster Tycoon for the rest of the summer.

If the leaked nvidia slides are to be believed, the 1060 will perform the same as a 980, which seems about right if the price is going to be around the $250 area, give or take.  The 980 is a 970+10%.

Of course, all speculation until it's out.

Not a bad game to spend your summer on.

Eh, your build would most likely be able ti handle the power draw fine. Although, if you're worried, you can easily undervolt and lower the memory clock a bit, and that would most likely keep it in check for the time being.
