Build Refinement

With a single larger drive these volumes can be reconfigured as needed. (Personally I use a single large partition for everything. Saves lots of time not having to move things around when space gets tight.)
I would suggest holding off on an M.2 drive. Prices are bound to come down and capacities should increase. At the moment 2.5" ssd are a better choice unless budget is not a significant limiter.
Improving program performance is much more complex than putting it on a fast drive. System drive speed makes a difference as it usually hosts the swap (virtual memory) file. It is also usually used to store temporary files. Programs like Photoshop can have scratch drives that unless the user locates elsewhere are usually hosted on the system drive.
@SamStrecker, thanks for the link. It certainly seems that faster memory makes a big difference with lower power cpu. Definitely something to keep in mind for low budget systems. I was also a little surprised to see the significant performance difference between i5 and i7. Previous cpu generations did not display such a noticeable difference.
Ok, thanks for the info
I think Ill plan to go with a normal ssd, and then see what the price is for the m.2 when the sale is on. And I was thinking about that whole temporary files thing so If I do get it I might use it as a os drive without the extra drive, but that all depends on the prices during the sale
Thanks for the help.
