I mean future-proofing, I have a 2560x1080 29in ultrawide and I want to know how long it will be good at that res.

I can't definitively answer this question, but I'd recommend getting the 8GB. What games do you play?

I don't have many triple a titles atm (really just six siege) but simpler games really, but I will probably play a mix between more gpu intensive and simpler games in the future as I increase my library, actually just realized I got XCOM 2.

Just get an aftermarket version. That'll fix it. ;)

We won't know if board partners can fix it until board partners release their versions, because the 6-pin can provide more power than rated, but instead, the card is pulling more from the PCIe slot.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

I knew what you meant but it's not a question that can be authoritatively answered.  New game titles may require more work from the GPU or less.  Perhaps Nvidia comes out with something that stomps the 480 in 3 months time and offers a better price point.  The future isn't written yet.  It's a good card for the price, but it is a mid tier card; not top tier.

There's something cool here - you just can't see it.

Ways to fix the power PCIe issue.

a.) vBIOS update

b.) Drivers might be able to control power management so updating that might be an option

c.) Voluntary Service campaign (technically not a recall then) to retrofit sold and unsold GPUs with an 8 or 6+6 pin plug with the disclaimer that if the GPU damages the mobo or anything bad happens and the GPU wasn't serviced then no party involved with the manufacture and sale of the GPU takes liability for any damages caused by the card.

Seriously just heard that an AMD representative said neither is possible, the issue is potentially a physical design on the board. JayzTwoCents just mentioned it on his stream.

Well that's interesting if that's the case if a vBIOS update or driver update can't fix it. Wonder what causes it to draw more from the PCIe than the 6 pin.

Unfortunately nobody knows why exactly this is the case, even AMD doesn't have an official response yet as they're investigating the issue.

Aftermarket versions will have more power connectors.

That doesn't mean that the RX 480 will stop pulling so much power from the PCIe slot, the load balances, we have to wait until AiB partners actually release cards with an 8-pin connector.
