Hi everybody!

I have a dual boot system Windows10/Ubuntu14.04 on my primary SSD and a mass storage HDD.

I'll tell you the whole story because i think this is where the problem came from.

I used to have the windows boot loader who could recognize both windows and linux. The problem was that whenever i had to login into ubuntu, the computer rebooted and showed me grub2. So I had to choose again ubuntu in order to start the system up. Quite annoying I'd say.

So I decided to get rid of grub, and after a few attempts i managed to do it. I restarted the system a few times in order to make sure that everything was worlking properly and it did.

Fast forward to 3-4 days later. I've only used windows in the meantime and it's working just fine, but when i tried to boot into ubuntu an error occurs.

I figure out that the problem is grub missing, even though that day everything worked.

So I reinstall grub and get rid of the windows launcher instead with this guide. Now i can finally use ubuntu!

The problem is that windows 10 now doesn't shut down or suspend anymore!

After googling for a bit the problem i find out this other guide. The second part of the guide fixes the shut down problem, but it seems more like a poor patch than a real fix. I mean, it works, but it doesn't explain what went wrong. In fact suspension mode (maybe it's called sleep mode in english, not sure though) still doesn't work, and i used to use it quite a lot!

What i mean by "doesn't work" is this: when i press shut down or sleep, the monitor turns off and it blocks the current session but everything (lights, fans, ecc) remains on.

Does anyone have any idea of what happend or how could i fix it? Thanks in advance!

(Sorry for the poor english, I'm not a native speaker)

I dont have dual boot but my pc does the same thing where it stays in that state, after i get bored of it i just do the good old pillow to the face while in sleep trick and shut it down by the power button. Maybe not the wisest decision but it hasnt started giving me problems yet

What was wrong with you when you decided to remove the GRUB? You have a damn SSD, like, were you THAT impatient? I don't see a proper solution other than completely wiping everything and starting everything all over if you want to fix the Sleep mode, because I'm not sure you will even find a solution to that anymore. But what I suggest you doing is just using the Hibernation mode (different than sleep) if you can't afford to power off the computer completely.

Thank you for the answers. Unfortunately none of them fixed the problem. I even tried hibernation mode and got the same result.

When i removed grub i thought that the windows boot loader was enough, i didn't know it was a bad idea.

And i've never heard of the fast boot/shutdown thing before then
