Last month I asked for the same question and everyone told me to wait for the 480 to come out. Now that the 480 is out, is it really that good of a card that I should buy it or are there better options out in the market other than the Nvidia 1000 series? Im on a $200-$300 budget and if possible I would like to get a card that is future proof. I don't have to play in ultra settings, med settings is fine with me as long as I get a smooth gameplay. Any form of help will be much appreciated.

P.S. I own a mid tower optiplex 7010 from dell with  an i5 3470 processor. I changed the power supply to a 500w one and added 4GB of ram

you can try finding 980/970/390/390x for cheap from a store or second hand. 980ti's are still pretty high on prices (arund 500$ in here) but it might be diffrent in there.

The 480 will give you a great boost. it is comparable to the upper end 970 cards. This will allow you to max out settings at 1080p on virtually all titles.

If I am to buy a 970, which brand and model would you recommend?

An RX 480 is right in your budget, being $250 seen for the 8GB on Amazon (though maybe out of stock), and delivering about the performance of a GTX 970 with current drivers. But the thing is, it will deliver significantly better performance in DX12 than a 970, and also AMD will surely refine the 480's drivers significantly over the next year or so, so additional performance will be had from an RX 480 over time.

so, while the RX 480 is around a GTX 970 now, it has these advantages:

4 - 8 GB of RAM

drivers will increase performance over time

superior DX12 performance

So unless you can get a GTX 970 for cheaper than $190, I would get the RX 480.

And the refrence design has faulty pci-e power draw wich is braking mobos, so wait for the aftermarket designs for 480
