Hello.

I am looking at buying a laptop for one of my family members. He will be photo editing, video editing, editing documents and web browsing. He wants a thin laptop that has a good battery life and has a good cooling system (I understand the laptop will get hot while editing and battery life will also get drained while editing.) My budget is $850-$1200USD. Screen size preference: 17inches

seems like a bad idea to spend that much money on a refurbished unit, considering that you're paying most of that for the GPU that OP's family member apparently doesn't really need.

For the price, I would seriously consider taking that Y50-70. I can't think of any other laptop that would comparable at that price point. And for editing media, even if it's amateur video or photo editing having the Cuda performance from the GTX960M over a lesser GPU is a safer bet as you won't be held back as much when they get into crazier effects. Refurbished units I find aren't as bad as people say they are. Like new units, it's a gamble based on the particular one you get. I know a few people who only buy refurbished Macbooks and they work just fine. If it runs problem free for a week or so, it'll be a reliable machine.
