Will this CPU suffice for FreeNAS

Go to solution Solved by Mayaa,

Plex recommends a passmark score of 2k per 1080p transcodes, very roughly of course, but that CPU has a score of 4200 so it should handle 2 of them fine at least.

General file storage things should not be a problem either.

First time post on the forum but long time subscriber of LTT.

I hope this is the right place to post this question, please forgive me if its not.

So im looking to build a ZFS FreeNAS for file storage and as a Plex media server.

System will be run in Z1 to get the most storage. 12TB in this case.

My question is will the Pentium G4520 3.6Ghz Dual core suffice for my build, So basicly can it handle running ZFS plus running 2 maybe 3 720p or 1080p transcodes at once on Plex?

The build (main items) will be as follows..

- Intel Pentium G4520 3.6GHz Dual-Core Processor

- Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler

- Gigabyte GA-X150M-PRO ECC Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

- Kingston ValueRAM 16GB (1 x 16GB) DDR4-2133 ECC Memory

- Corsair Builder CX500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply

- 16GB Sandisk USB or 16GB m.2 SATA for FreeNAS OS

- 4 x 4TB Seagate 7200rpm standard HDDs

(I know I shouldn't really use desktop HDDs, but im on a budget and cant exactly afford 4 WD Red drives)

Thanks in advance

Probably. Also I would use the CX 550 or EVGA 500B instead of the CX500 as the CX500 has bad components and running it all the time is a bad idea.

Actually it does, it supports ECC unbuffered memory.

You wouldn't really expect such a low end part to have support but Intel snuck in cross the board ECC support a while ago and few noticed.

Well according to Intel it does support ECC so im inclined to go with them on that one, but thanks anyway.

I was surprised to see that too, especially for the price.
