Yes that will work but it won;t be any more accurate than the sound cards virtual surround.

You can't just magically make surround accurate with a pair of headphones...its all approximation as they only have two drivers.....7.1 headsets (with multiple drivers are better, but...meh, don't like them, they are also heavy...)

I find it better to use normal stereo to pinpoint where a sound is coming from, find it better than virtual surround and you don't have to distort the sound to a silly degree.

Did you use Logitech G35 for example? I used it few times and by the time i returned it to shop where they came from, i'm looking for such great positioning and surround sound as they've had. I did' not like music on this headset but i regret that i returned them.

The Logitech G35 isn't a 7.1 headset, its a 7.1 virtual surround headset, it only has two drivers, and its accuracy is questionable.

And no I've never used it, as I prefer normal 2.1 stereo.

If you want true surround sound in a headset then you need to get something like the Roccat Kave, which has multiple drivers in each ear cup (basically a true surround system condensed into a headset.  But there are draw backs, the drivers are small, so sound quality is not exactly brilliant and they are heavy....

I've never bought into this hype of 5.1/7.1 surround gaming using headsets, separation cannot be good no matter how many drivers there are in the headset. They are enclose in such a small space, makes audio separation..........negligible at best. I tried it once a ways back, using my X-Fi XM + Razer HP-1 (among the first headsets with multiple drivers), bass was lacking, separation sucked the big one.....the overall experience was just so underwhelming to say the least. I'd used 3 minijacks to connect the headset to my soundcard for 6 channels.....

But I'm talking about virtual surround not discrete surround. Maybe I just have bad headphones for this. Coz most of reviews of Xonar DX are praising its virtual surround sound abilities via Dolby Headphones. Maybe Razer Carcharias are just bad for surround sound experience? Maybe should i buy Steelseries Siberia V2?

If you set your soundcard to simulate a 7.1 surround sound setup and also tell the game to produce surround audio it should work very well. I have a DGX and just love the way surround sounds, going back to normal stereo feels weird for a few minutes, because I'm not used to hearing voices in my head anymore xD

In the software you can also make the virtual 7.1 surround sound system rotate around your head, you should try it it really shows how well it works ^^

Finally someone who used sound card and can really help. I use settings like that 8 channels Dolby Headphones ON In game headphones set and in win7 set to 8 channels, but i think my headset doesn't work well with surround sound. I need to buy steelseries siberia v2 i think. Mine is semi open.

Which do you have? I have razer orcas and they are also semi-open and they work great with surround.

Set the 7.1 shifter up like this:

http://prntscr.com/1uup0d

then listen to some music, close your eyes and try to localize where the virtual speakers are. you should be able to hear them traveling around you.
