Posted June 23, 2016 OK, so this has probably been asked a thousand times, I can't be sure, but I've done so much research my head hurts and yet I'm still going round in circles! As with most upgrades, I have a finite budget and I can't decide how to allocate it. So please, vote for what you think would yield me the best results in an almost purely gaming focused PC. I am running a 1440p 144Hz monitor and like to be able to have all eye candy turned on. EDIT: In a perfect world, I'd have the best of both, a 6700K with a GTX 1080, but in the timeframe I have (want this up and running ASAP as I have no PC at the moment due to selling old hardware), I can only afford the two options presented. Posted June 24, 2016 most current games can only get anything out of up to 4 cores so the 6700k won't do much extra for gaming, and if in a year or two dx12 changes that and you want to play specifically those kind of games then you could change it out then easily enough desktop Spoiler r5 3600,3450@0.9v (0.875v get) 4.2ghz@1.25v (1.212 get) | custom loop cpu&gpu 1260mm nexxos xt45 | MSI b450i gaming ac | crucial ballistix 2x8 3000c15->3733c15@1.39v(1.376v get) |Zotac 2060 amp | 256GB Samsung 950 pro nvme | 1TB Adata su800 | 4TB HGST drive | Silverstone SX500-LG HTPC Spoiler HTPC i3 7300 | Gigabyte GA-B250M-DS3H | 16GB G Skill | Adata XPG SX8000 128GB M.2 | Many HDDs | Rosewill FBM-01 | Corsair CXM 450W Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/615600-2-options/#findComment-7952027 Share on other sites
 That was a consideration, briefly, but with AUD prices the way they are, that also blows the budget. Posted June 24, 2016 If your objective is gaming, then you should ALWAYS choose GPU when it comes down to GPU vs CPU. that is exactly what the GPU is there for. that is pretty much its ONLY job (except for very specific workstation uses) Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/615600-2-options/#findComment-7952051 Share on other sites
 I single 1080 would give me the performance I need, without the issues, however rare they may be nowadays, of SLI. If the 1080 was touch and go in regards to performance and giving me what I wanted, 1070 SLI would probably be the go. But so far, every 1440p benchmark I've seen has the 1080 smashing it. I Would Agree on 1440p 60Hz, but not 144. You need two 1070s or 1080s to max it out at 144.
