I have been running a Windows Server 2012 R2 file server on 4x 1TB drives in RAID 10. I am using an Asus H170M-Plus using intergrated Intel RST.

In the last couple of weeks the RAID has been failing once a week. I would create the RAID, then it would appear as degraded, then within five minutes it would fail.

I am not sure what the error is but I took all four 1TB drives out, plugged them into my main rig and looked at CrystalDiskInfo and found some interesting errors on two of the drives which can be seen below.

I now have two questions.

A. What does this mean?

B. Would this error explain the issues with the RAID or could it be a faulty controller.

Thanks

Both the failed drives are Seagate. There is also one Samsung and one WD.

Have run SMART test and both drives passed. What do those SMART errors I saw in CrystalDisk mean and should I be bothered by them.

Have run short generic test and the ST1000 drive failed. Now what. Do I need to replace the drive and if I do will it fix the RAID issues?

As much as I can see you should be good to go with your harddrives.

Have tried to initialise the 2TB drive but I get this error. Two of the 1TB drive are showing up as a single 2TB

The first picture I would worry about. If the Reallocated sectors (Basically sectors the drive has deemed unusable and replaced them to somewhere else) continue to increase, that drive is on the road to death. The RAW value should be all zeros.

In the second one, it's not quite as bad. I would also take a listen to both drives. If they make a click click click continuously, it's hitting on part of the platter which is a bad thing.

I find it interesting they both passed Seagate's Long Generic test though.

I remember my dead WD Black failed the Extended Lifeguard test. I could tell it was failing because you could hear a continuous clicking sound when the drive was idling, which is a very bad thing.
