First off, I want to apologize if this isn't the right spot for this kind of question. This is my first time on this forum and I couldn't figure out where this would fit in.

I'm looking for a new cloud service for personal use with the following features:

  • cloud backup
  • ability to share files with download links
  • sync with mac and windows (i.e. if I change something on my mac, it gets changed in the backup and on my windows)
  • file recovery / versioning
  • ios and android apps
  • ability to access from a web browser

I currently have a PogoPlug Series 4 Backup Device which I'm not a big fan of because I'm always running into backup errors, the interface is super slow and its still on a hard drive in my place (i.e. not really backed up).

I need about 500gb storage. I'd prefer it to be free but I understand that's a lot to ask for, so definitely willing to pay if it can meet all my requirements. Thanks in advance for all the help!

For the cloud backups I strongly recommend Crash plan, I've used them for years and had to restore a few times and it has worked flawlessly so far.

For the rest either Google Drive or Dropbox.  Dropbox's syncing is faster but Google Drive allows searching in PDFs and images which I think is very useful. People also use these services as backup but I still prefer to use Crash plan for backups.

Before crashplan I used to use carbonite and it was very unreliable as it lost my data twice and when I needed to restore I also had problems. Is it better these days?

I don't know, currently I use a NAS. I used to use carbonite ~ 3 years ago and never had a problem, but then again, I never had to restore from the backup so for all I know the restore was terrible.

The nice thing about crashplan is that not only does it backup reliably to the cloud,  it also allows you to backup to local devices such a NAS and even a friend's computer at the same time, so you have multiple local and remote backups with the same software.
