DAC/AMP for K7XX?

Artemiis

Title pretty much sums it up, just wondering if anyone who has personal experience with their own pair of Massdrop x AKG K7XX's can let me know if they needed a DAC/AMP to use them to their utmost potential? I have read quite a few reviews online, most people say that they are harder to drive and that the mids will sound recessed without a DAC/AMP combo. I would mostly be using them on my computer with an Asus Z170-A mobo which has Realtek ALC892 featuring Asus' Crystal Sound 3. If you do think they need a DAC/AMP, I would like to hear some suggestions that you think are good pairings for the K7XX. Preferably my max limit would be about $200 USD. Thanks for taking the time to check this post out! =)

For $200, maybe a used Schiit stack?  Or b-stock from their website.

I have a schiit stack (modi 2 uber and magni 2) with my K712, and it's very pleasant.  The Magni IMO has a tiny bit of warmth to it which I find makes the K712's sing nicely.

If you want cheaper, maybe a Fiio E10k, or perhaps one of SMSL's offerings.

Yea I was looking at Shiit's modi/magni combo, its at the very top of my price range but totally doable if most think that its the best pairing

I bought 2 b-stock units from them, one had a tiny tiny scratch near the back, and the other one doesn't appear to have anything wrong with it.

It'll save $20 if that helps, you still get the same warranty as well I believe.

https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-o2-amplifier

This is a good deal ;) (don't need to get the RCA edition if you don't want to also plug in speakers)

Ship date 12sept. fml. Nevermind. Anyway i'd try them out first. Recessed mids seems pretty vague statement though. Especially since that won't be the case for every setup.

Try without amp, before buying a amp. It is really that simple. If you need a amp look at schiit products or any of the amps I have recommended in my thread about amps and dacs linked in my signature.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

Feel free to pm me if you have a question for me or quote me. If you want to hear what I have to say about something just tag me.
