How good is minecraft really?

I think I'm going to buy it soon but is it really that fun? I've never really tried it, just seen youtube videos on it. I'm interested in survival mode and stuff but I want to hear your opinions on it :D

 

Also, I plan on hosting a server for just my friend and I. Do you know how to go about that?

Playing by yourself (lol) gets boring quickly.

Not enough new stuff, they're making it so more demanding computers are needed (kid don't have good computers generally) and it's just old if they rolled out great new updates regularly they could make the game last a few more years.

I have had minecraft for years and still love to play it with my friends. One of the most replayable games I have ever played and easily worth the <$20 it runs now days.
