Hdds dying

So a couple of weeks ago I had ordered a 3tb hard drive to get more space. After about two weeks the hdd died on me. I figured that this might just be a faulty drive and sent mine back. I received a new one which is working fine but, today I noticed that a separate 250gb hard rive I was using just to keep some media files is not showing up in windows. Does anyone know a good way to check if either my psu or my motherboard is killing my drives?
