Greetings,

Has anyone here migrated off a SSD/HDD before? I need some software to help me with this; however they all seem to be paid-for and ridiculously overpriced.

Really just looking for consistency and reputability, not speed - would like it to work the first time however I have plans for setting up rescue media.

Any help is appreciated.

Maybe check out Hiren's boot disk. I think they have some tools for this.

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

While googling around waiting for some suggestions, I stumbled across this:

http://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/download/tools.html

Does this ONLY work with Samsung SSDs? I would be doing from an APOTOP SSD to an SAMSUNG EVO SSD, so im not exactly sure if the software works both ways.  (Does it only work from Samsung to Samsung?)

I will be ordering a Samsung 850 EVO, so im assuming that the Magician software will come bundled with it?

Am I correct? Is this software dependable then? If thats the case, ill just go with that.

not sure if all ssd's have migration software available I know hyper x does so you can check the manufacturer's website to see if they have their own software or you can use something like this Macrium Reflect to create the recovery media just in case something doesn't go right and clone the drive.

Not sure if Samsung's software does any checks to see the type of drive so there is no guarantee that it would work with non Samsung ssds

I just use Windows shadow copy but I got plenty of spare drives to park the images on.

If you think that this is easier

Could save heaps.of time I'm getting the 4 Bay version myself because it makes life easier and can dock more drives without opening the case.  It's an option anyway as it has a clone option with one button and no OS or system needed.

As far as I'm aware, that's just a partition manager, and will not allow cloning. Please provide a link if that's no longer the case though.

There are several good options.

1. If you have a Samsung SSD, use the Samsung cloning tool that comes with it. It's available for download on the Samsung website if you lost the CD.

2. If one of your HDD's is a Western Digital, then you can download for free the Acronis TrueHome WD Edition cloning software

3. Clonezilla is great, as long as you're not going from a BIGGER partition to a SMALLER partition. Clonezilla will not resize the partition for you. You can, however, easily shrink the partition ahead of time on the HDD before cloning, using GParted or Paragon Partition Manager, etc.

4. Macrium Reflect is a decent option too

5. EaseUS ToDo Backup is a free tool that can create a Bootable USB, we've used this many times at work to clone HDD's - but it should also work with SSD's.

There are other free tools, but those are the ones I've personally used, that are pretty great.
