ITX as the smaller size I think would most likely be useful, but then again, more PCI slots would be useful... I would also go for the 1265Lv3 as the extra's may prove beneficial to you.

I'd go for cheaper parts overall unless you're dead set on them for the looks.

Matx should be cheaper if you can compromise on parts.

Are you open to different builds?

Of course I am :). I know the Gene VI, for example, seems a bit nuts, but I do have some reasons for it:

1. Asus. Nuff said.

2. It has 8 SATA ports, which could come in handy if a couple more friends want to make use of it.

3. The MPCI-E Combo. IIRC, it supports the upcoming M2 ssd's (I heard JJ say something about it in a TekSyndicate video, I'll have to see it again), although I could be very wrong about that. Still, it's pretty nice to have that feature and we'll take advantage of it.

4. Beastly LAN

But like I said, I'm quite open for anything. Suggest away :)

Before I jump right in, what kind of game servers are you planning on hosting?

Left 4 Dead 2, DayZ, we've got someone who plays Minecraft a lot and has been talking about making a bigger server, Half-Life 2,... Those are the ones that I can come up with right now and that I would like. Nothing too recent, but that doesn't mean we won't be hosting something more recent (and probably more demanding).

I don't mean to be rude, but do you have any additional comments or thoughts? I'd like to hear your opinion, but you seem to have looked over my last post (unless you think this build is completely hopeless :P).

Sorry about the late reply. I had a bunch of open tabs I had to get back to. I had been busy for the past few days so I had more than usual to go through.

Here's what I was thinking: http://de.pcpartpicker.com/p/1K2Lr

Move rear case fan to front intake. S12A exhaust, replace 212 Evo stock fan with F12.

3TB models of WD Red have a more robust enclosure that make them near silent--not sure about the 4TB model. The 3TB model does have a better price/gb ratio though.

Motherboard: The ASRock seems like a nice board, and I have no problems with it being H87 (the Z87/H87 is just Intel marketing BS for the most part). However, some of the features on the Gene VI still make me cling to it. Not the looks of it, not the fact that it's the most expensive and I want to spend a lot of money, not the ROG branding. Here's why: mPCIe Combo II, 8 SATA ports, 4 DDR3 slots, ASUS build quality (although the ASRock is probably real fine as well, and this is just me being biased).

Memory: Nothing bad to say about that, but the fact that the Crucial Ballistix has a bit lower CAS latency (8) and less voltage (1.35V), does make it a bit more preferable.

Storage: You're right, the 3TB ones do have a better price/gb ratio. If I had only 4 or 6 SATA ports, I would've gone with the 4GB, but the GENE VI has 8 so there's no worries about using a bit less capacity per drive.

Case: Now, this is a very personal thing. Fractal is good, but Lian Li is better. It's also significantly more expensive, I know. But, the criteria for my cases have always been: the form factor has to be as compact as possible and the materials should be as durable as possible. The Lian Li is very compact, and the all-aluminium build quality is a definite plus. A case has to last for 10 years+ and still look brand new: I know the Lian Li can pull that of, but I'm not sure about the plastic Fractal.

PSU: I like the fact that the Seasonic Platinum series is platinum and fanless, + it has a 7 year warranty (the 360W has a 5 year warranty). Other than that, the 360W is quite excellent. It's just the little things, again, that convince me to stay with the 400W Platinum.

The reason I stick with the more 'premium' parts, is just because I expect this build to run for a good 6-7 years. I could go with cheaper parts, that are a bit less 'good' (or have less features/upgradeability), but my reasoning is: if I buy higher-end parts today that are a bit more expensive, it'll last me longer and cost me less money in the long run. I tend to believe this is a good way of thinking for whatever you're buying, be it a computer, a couch, wall paint or clothing.

For the CPU, I've decided to go for the i7-4470T, which is basicly the same chip as the 1265Lv3 I wanted to buy, just branded differently (Intel marketing BS, again). It's easier to get and, therefore, about €20-30 ($30-40) cheaper. I'm not sure about the 1220v3 you suggested: the clock rates are higher than the 4470T, it's way cheaper, has no iGPU, no hyperthreading, and the TDP is 80W as opposed to 45W. So, I'm a bit torn here: the iGPU, TDP are major selling points for the 4770T compared to the 1220v3, but I'm unsure if this justifies the price premium. I'll definitely have to think about it :)

If you've read this far, thanks a lot for your time and be sure to reply if you feel like it :D

How much storage are you shooting for in the long run? I'm thinking by the time you get to filling up all the ports, hdd's will come in higher capacities anyway.

The lower latency and lower voltage shouldn't make much of a difference for server use.

The case isn't a tank but it's far from flimsy. I suggested it because it's optimized for silence and you said you were looking for that.

The psu I linked is just a costdown version of the x series which has fans that turn off. It's really quiet.

Higher end parts do not necessarily last longer. It's generally just depends on how well you maintain the hardware. It's generally more cost efficient to get cheaper parts that are of good quality instead of getting high end ones and upgrading as you need to when it comes to technology.

I just realized the 1220v3 doesn't have integrated graphics (sorry about that). Xeons that end in 0 don't have iGPU's and those that end in 5 do.

I found the 4570S which is a significantly cheaper alternative and only misses hypertheading: http://www.amazon.de/Intel-4570S-Prozessor-Sockel-LGA1150/dp/B00CV3E3WU/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1380791322&sr=1-1&keywords=haswell+cpu

Fyi, performance for servers aren't affected that much by a few hundred mhz.
