Upgrading from FX 8350 to i5 6600k, worth it?

X99 there is a M-ITX board and Zen will probably have them to! (FM2+ is ITX but the best CPU there is Athlon X4 880K...)

I upgraded to a 6600k, GTX 980 from a FX8350, HD7970 and the I'm very happy with the upgrade. Very worth it IMO.

The Ashes of singularity cpu benchmarks still showed that this particular game was still demending on the cpu per core performance, the extra cores of the FX8 core cpu´s still didnt show any major benefits.

You're all kind of missing the point, I'm not asking which is better or if I should stay with AMD, I'm saying that considering I am going to be making a mini itx build, is an i5 6600k a worthwhile upgrade, or should I spend more to get a better upgrade and a system that will be capable for longer.

i did this upgrade a little while back, so worth it higher fps (most games were 10+ fps higher) but it was the average fps where it really shone the 8350 used to dip all the time

That's what I'm getting a lot as well, random drops in FPS despite my GPU being capable.

im running 290 xfire and initially thought it was the xfire making things horrid, annoying thing is if you watch youtube videos no one has this issue or comments on it

Those benchmarks dont realy look that vallid to me tbh.

Especialy not if i look at the DX11 numbers, and compair those.

But yeah i dont have the hardware to replicate those tests myself atm.

I know these are older tests, and they might have done allot of driver optimizations, and optimizations to the game aswell.

Mini itx isnt even an option on AM3+ for that matter.

 

Lets say that i own a FX8350 myself for allmost 4 years.

And i definitely know its pro´s and con´s.

Performance based, and architectual based.

To find myself those newer benchmarks a bit too good to be true.

However, it would be awesome if they are true doe.

No because gamegpu is the ONLY source who bother to benchmark old games months and years after... (they made even new ones for Wart Thunder and World of tanks and speaking of World of tanks the DX11 update fixed bottlenecks for all AMD CMT based CPUs...)

Yeah would be awesome.

But i need more sources to back it up for ashes of singularity.

DX11 and DX12.

I will investigate it more deeply wenn i have the time.

Still i´m personaly not conviced about the vallidity of those new tests, but that of course does not mean that you are any wrong or right for that matter.

I always check that page before I buy a game! (project cars is not a smart idea to buy if you play with Radeon heheh)

I have also noticed a pattern about most console ports, they mostly are running fine on FX CPUs! (there are exceptions tough)

Each new Intel release only moves the bar forward ahead a couple of % at a time, so even if you did wait for the next revision it probably wouldn't make enough of a difference to "keep it viable" much longer. Yes the last i5 the FX-83X0 could beat was the Haswell generation when it came to multi-threaded stuff after Skylake it could not but FX to Skylake i5 is not worth it in my opinion, wait for Zen or buy X99 is much more valid solutions...

I wouldn't take that upgrade for a video editing system, no. The i5 does about as well as an FX-8350 in those applications, so you'd need an i7 to see any big benefits.

 

But for gaming, absolutely. I think the i5-6600K is totally worth the upgrade there.
