Evening ladies & gents,

I've asked for build suggestions in the past, however stuff happened and those builds couldn't come to fruition. However I now have a full-time gig and wanted to invest in a powerful workstation which I'll be doing Video and 3d editing/rendering, animation, programming and naturally gaming. Also have it be VR ready when I take that jump later down the line. Aesthetic wise I am going for white/black.

This build is an early idea, and many parts will surely change around: Monitors, SSD's (2 for RAID), RAM, Keyboard, Mouse will inevitably change depending on sales when I buy this in about a month. I'm also aware that we're in a weird phase with GPU's as the new ones are just coming out of the gate, so 1070 or 480 is in the air right now.

I'm comfortable spending a good amount on this PC, however I do still want to be a smart consumer.

Any suggestions to better the build? Note this is in CAD.

Inhales....... BOI

CPU Cooler : For that price, may swell get an AIO, like a Corsair H100i v2 (my fav)

GPU : DEAR GOD... I know the FE looks cool, but the cooling for them is terrible, and that is always the case for reference (blower) style cards. Get an EVGA ACX 3.0 card. The cooling is SOOOO MUCH BETTER. About 20 degrees lower when under full load

Case: Coolermaster Mastercase 5 Pro

Mouse : Logitech MX Master

Roses are red

My name is Roy

The 1070 is going to be a waste on 1080p displays, you'd be better off waiting for the RX 480s

and it's not a server with RAID, so you probably don't really need a UPS

also you should be going with a 5820K instead of a 6700K

Of course you can, of course you can be a smart consumer. ;)

Some parts I will be adding/changing after getting more information is the GPU and SSD.

You'll need to clear me on why you need to RAID those SSDs. And do you have an HDD already? I'm giving a standard 1TB HDD recommendation for now.

The R9 390 is a placeholder for the RX 480, or a recommendation if you want to buy now.

Tax is included in price. Peripherals not included.

The problem is that this is an nVidia product and scoring any nVidia product a "zero" is also highly predictive of the number of nVidia products the reviewer will receive for review in the future.

It was moreso a placeholder for when the other GPUI's start coming up. But I'll take a look at your suggestion.

Right, I had figured the 1070 was better of for 1440p displays, however they are kinda expensive atm. What are the things to weigh when going red or green? I am more partial to team green since I see it being fanboy'd more often however I am open to waiting for the 480.

I already have an HDD, which is why it wasn't included in my build. The SDD's are just for faster read and writes in general. More of a luxury expense than a necessary one. Although if the performance isn't hugely significant I can easily live without.

I appreciate the input everyone btw, thank you!

Pretty much. It's 10% slower cores but 50% more cores, which means a 40% performance advantage while rendering.

On the topic of 1440p monitors, they're worth it. If you can afford a computer that drives 1440p, you can afford the display as well. You can tone down the graphics to make budget room (the RX 480 will come out at about $300 CAD, will give out playable 1440p performance unless rumors are way off).

For that, just pick a single 250GB SSD. No need to RAID.

It's only like 5% slower on the IPC side, Unless there's a heafty OC on the 6700K they should end up about the same for single threaded tasks

Going with AMD saves you money on a free-sync display compared to a G-sync display

$350 CAD for 1080p 144hz TN free-sync

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/ZBZ2FT/aoc-monitor-g2460pf

$450 CAD for the G-sync monitor of the same specs
https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/R998TW/aoc-monitor-g2460pg

and at $250 USD anyways, the RX 480 should have about the performance of a 390/X, which is currently under $400 CAD, and it'll have at least half the power consumption for easier crossfire if crossfire support improves, which I think AMD may just push more to compete with the 1080 until vega

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/P27CmG/sapphire-video-card-100382ntoc2l

and if your focus is productivity, you'd be best off investing in a 4k display potentially, though I've no idea how much those are going to be in canada, especially for like a 40" one

Also going with the 480 would save you enough money almost to afford this 27" 4k IPS free-sync display anyways at $550 CAD

Hmm good points around. I've cut back an SSD, removed the UPS and have opted for the 5820K as suggested. As far as GPU goes, I'll definitely keep my options open, wait out the next few weeks and see what amd performance is like and what other cards come out from OEM's.

Appreciate it everyone!
