However if you intend to ever upgrade your Pentium to a proper unlocked i5 or i7, you will need a proper Z87/Z97 mobo.

Low end mobos have very limited capability as well, like limited RAM frequency, RAM slots, poor VRM for overclocking.

Even an G3258 at high OC cannot match a Haswell i3

And when the extra threads come into play, the Pentium will be left in the dust.

 

No I don't have a modern Pentium and neither do I know which 'budget' mobo will offer the highest clocks.

Silicon lottery applies regardless. YMMV.

I you don't manage a high OC, don't whine. You did cheap out after all.
