GTX 970s go for the same price or better all the time. So its kind of a toss up because the price and performance is about the same.

for 300 usd you could get a reference 980 2nd hand so no its not worth it

Id get the 390X or a RX 480 8gb before a 980. The vram is a very limiting factor. SLi is virtually worthless on it. if you never ever plan to go from 1080p or play at the new above ultra settings that games have now then i guess a 980 will do. i would still future proof with the extra 8 gb.
