Best commercial router for range

Theseus_3gg

I've got a relatively large house and the router provided by the ISP doesn't cover the house. To remedy this I've bought TP Link wireless extenders (wifi repeaters). These however have had little to no effect on the range of the wifi. The speed at the router is (on average) 90mbs but that drops down to 0.1 to 0.01 when I go upstairs. Everyone I've spoken to has said either it's not their fault if they are my ISP or TP Link or if they are private networking specialists I'm told there's nothing I can do. I won't accept this as places like airports or schools can provide wifi over 110s of meters whereas my horrible network can't provide functioning wifi 2 or 3 rooms away. All research I've done has led me to the idea that I should buy an aftermarket "commercial grade" router but I'm absolutely clueless when it comes to networking. I was hoping you lot could help me out.

If if anyone has any idea for commercial routers with a range of about 20-30 meters (preferably) although more would not be ruled out if that's what I need to pay for to get good wifi. I pay a small fortune for this service (£72 per month)  and its absolutely useless.

If you're as clueless as me about what to buy, you could always tell me what I'm looking for in a good router so I can have a look myself.

Thanks, guys!

any and all feedback would be useful.

The "speed at the router"?  90Mbps is kinda awful period.  A typical Wireless N (the standard for several years) can easily get 600Mbps.

But anyways, if you're just looking for a new router, the RT-AC68U is my favorite router for end users.  Good price, good range, good speeds, great firmware, and many other benefits.  Really no downside.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

You could always get an Ubiquiti UAP and turn off the wireless function on your current router. I had a similar issue and bought a UAP-LR (this was before the newest line of their UAPs came out). I have it sitting in my basement with my router and through 2 floors and a few walls I am able to get around 55mbps down and 50mbps up.

By speed at the router I mean having plugged directly into the router via ethernet cable. 90 is more than enough for me to be honest but I live in England where 90 at the router is a miracle in itself. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll check it out.

I've heard of Ubiquiti before. I'll have a look at the router and get back to you.

Then that is even worse, unless it was a 10/100Mbps connection, and if that is the case throw the damn thing out and burn it.

Ubiquiti crushed any consumer grade networking appliance that I've had in the past. I used to be use to getting close to 15mbps down and 12up before but adding the UAP showed me what I was missing out. One thing I left out before was I pay for 60mbps up and down. So to be able to get almost all of that through my access point is the reason I recommend them so highly.

Wired routers are kind of a fickle thing. it depends on your internet connection. If you have something like gigabit you will need something with power. I have an Edgerouter Lite. In order to connect to my ISP I have to use PPPoE, which has significant hardware needs. This is one of the few routers that can do gigabit fiber PPPoE WAN. If you're talking about routing internally, most anything with a gigabit port ~should~ give you full gigabit internally. It's when you have a gigabit WAN connection you run into issues. If you are looking at wireless, the Unifi APs are absolutely incredible. I use one at my home and get coverage all the way through my back yard and detached garage.

Just to let you all know, I've looked at all your suggestions and decided that I'd rather go for a bit overkill than anything else, so I'm going with the unifi ap ac lite. Should suit my needs and the ceiling mounting will look great next to my smoke alarm lol. Thanks for all your help!
