Converters strip audio, that's why you need the additional cable.

Okay I solved the main problem, I found out (my ignorance) that unless the VGA cable was connected and was the active source for the monitor, the audio would not pass through, but I've messed around with the volume and even at 10% the PS3 audio has static noise, do you know any solution for that?

I recently bought and HDMI to VGA adapter to plug my PS3 video to my only monitor, which only has VGA, and I use it with my computer and PS3.

The adapter has audio built in via 3,5mm and I have used it directly to my speakers.

I would like to connect the audio to my computer so I have the two devices outputting at the same time, to use with my speakers or headphones.

I tried a male-male 3.5mm jack from the adapter to the Line In jack on my computer, turned on "Listen to this device" and still got no audio pass trough.

Does anyone know of a solution?

PS. my sound card doesn't have Optical In so that option is not viable for me.

From my understanding the audio jacks on the back of the computer are strictly output. If you had a 2x male to 1x female adapter you could plug the output of the computer and the output of the PS3 to the computer speakers then plug headphones into the speakers output port.

The thing is I didn't want to buy additional cables and have to use the AV Multi cable as well to pass only the sound, I read people did it with a splitter like yours so I don't understand why it wouldn't work with a straight 3.5mm connection like I have, since it works well if I connect it directly to the speakers.

The Line In jack is an input used to connect external audio sources to the computer, to record or monitor the sound, so it should work in theory.

Take your audio sources, plug them into your pc (line in or microphone), enable listen to and select the appropriate output device, adjust the levels on the inputs so you can't hear static noise and both inputs are equally loud.

I did that, several times I've unplugged and plugged everything back and I still get no sound from the PS3.

Sorry, you're right, for like microphone for example. Did you select the correct output device? (your speakers) The issue would be if this were a microphone you would hear yourself talking quite loudly in your own ear. So I don't know if it's possible.

Look in the audio settings panel thingy and check if your pc sees incoming audio, and if it can direct that audio to an output device. Also make sure the ps3 is outputting sound.

Yes, I only have 1 output connected to the PC, if I do exactly the same thing but with my microphone, I hear myself perfectly, but if I connect the audio from the PS3, I hear nothing.

The PC detects that Line In is connected, but the bars don't move when I make sounds on the PS3, the output is configured correctly at it has the Line In at 100% volume and I still don't hear nothing, and the PS3 is outputting sound, because if I switch the jack to one that goes directly to the speakers, it starts playing sound immediately.

I would get a Y adapter that will plug your computer and the PS3 adapter into your speakers directly. Bypassing the computer.

Make sure that the ps3 has the volume at max. It could be a ground loop as well, but you'd need an audio isolator for that. Just too much amplification at some point probably. Also check your audio control panel (like realtek or something) and make sure to play around with all related settings.

The adapter itself could cause static, audio is also very susceptible to interference. Kind of acts like an antenna adsorbing electromagnetic noise around it...I'm probably wrong though. I'm not sure what is causing the static.

I tweaked it all and I got rid of the noise almost completely, thank you guys!
