Lower FPS aftger over clocking

Hey guys I was overclocking my gtx 970 and I overclocked it a bit and noticed I was getting lower FPS. I have no idea what the problem is here can anyone help me?

had the same problem, but after reinstalling windows it suddenly worked correctly (more fps instead of lower)  dunno what caused this. (reinstalled it not because i expected it to work but because other reasons

Have you checked GPU usage in games? If not, try MSI afterburner's on-screen display and add GPU usage, temperature and clock speed to the OSD.

Check for thermal throttling.  I once overclocked a different card only to get lower FPS numbers.  Once I traced down the issue, I found the card was thermal throttling.
