Hi so i built my dual xeon system for around $200 and it has alot of value for money, one thing i dont get is that sometimes when i turn on the computer i get 5 short beeps and 1 long beep. i traced it down to it being a memory error where the system wont recognize my ram installed in it. right now i have 8gb DDR3 of kingston valueram 1600Mhz. on my motherboard website it says the max speed it supports is 1333mhz at 1.5v so right now im borrowing the kingston ram from my dad's PC to get this one working. is the reason why my computer wont boot because the board cant recognize RAM that is faster than 1333mhz? should i just go on ebay and find some DDR3 ECC registered server memory and put it into this board? my board is a supermicro X8 DTL IF. i know that when i reseat the DIMMs on my board when using the 1600mhz ram it would boot up and work like nothing happened but sometimes i would get the no boot and the beep codes. anyone know what this is? thanks guys.

sadly i dont, my options here are limited. what i was thinking is to get memory that is on the supported memory list for my motherboard on the supermicro website. on ebay its currently 24GB for $45

That's an option as well.

I... don't know. Considering that you can also re-sell your current RAM to get part (or all) of the money back, I'd say it's a pretty good deal.

What is your motherboard? did you check for compatibility to the RAM? Sometimes, boards can be picky when it comes to RAM sticks. You can always grab new sticks and they're cheap nowadays.

the ram im using isnt listed as supported by both the CPU from intel and the motherboard from supermicro. my cpu 2 X5650s according to intel support a max speed of 1333mhz the ram im using is rated at 1600mhz. but technically isnt the ram automatically downclocked to 1333mhz by the motherboard and cpu? that is what im confused about. i already ordered a 24gb kit of DDR3 1333Mhz ECC Registered memory for $45 from ebay, i searched the part number and on the supermicro website it says that it is confirmed working and tested. can you guys confirm that this is true? i never built a computer using a server motherboard before.

here is the ram i bought
