Depends on how you set it up. Normally a good idea, but if you block net with the firewall and don't use this for normal tasks its fine. Also are you paying for windows server? It starts at 400.

I run Symantec Endpoint Protection on my Windows Server, never had a issue with it. You do have to get used to server antiviruses though, they're quite different from consumer ones...the settings are set up via policies vs on the antivirus itself for consumer grade ones. I was tempted to try to install Norton on my home server, but decided not to and just roll with Endpoint.

 

I would definitely get a antivirus for a Windows server, they're prone to being attacked more because they're online more than plain PCs. However, it depends on your usage too. If this never really sees the internet, then no, don't bother. However, I use my server as my primary storage and a workstation (The CPU in it is way faster than my 2500K).

 

I'm doubtful you need one for a Linux based server though.
