looking for a cheap small solution for a Nas with around 5TB or more space

its gotta be dead silent and its got to be able to download torrents via a remote control app like teamviewer (ill be using teamviewer cause then i can access it easily from other networks)

and its gotta be power efficient and its going to have to be able to stream this content to all the Hardware in the house

smartphones other pc's tablets and

so tl;dr want seedbox/nas/streambox need to be silent and cheap and power efficient

EDIT: what do you guys think about this?

Firstly I wouldn't worry about an aftermarket CPU cooler because from memory all 1155 CPU's come with a heatsink. Yes, it would be nice to have a good quiet one however it's a luxury you can't really afford as you have better places to spend your budget. Secondly, I would look at going to a basic i3 processor and a H77 board for a variety of reasons. It'll give you more power especially with multitasking and it will also mean you can run software RAID. Asus and ASrock both have good quality mini-ITX H77 boards.

Is that case definite? I ask because some people must have a certain case however there are cheaper options out there.

i dont need that much power for just streaming content?

the nas is not going to be used for anything alse then streaming and downloading and backups...

i wont be using raid btw i dont want my backups on raid

if u can find cheaper cases with sound reducing foam etc and a psu that can support the system then yeah by all means

there arent many i think

also i dont want to hear the pc so the stock cpu fan wont do, that thing makes allot of noise especially high pitched coil whine :/

You're planning on running NAS off multiple drives that aren't RAIDed? Strange...

Anyway, Intel stock coolers despite everyone complaints aren't that loud, especially compared to PSU fans for example. With the CPU, you can go for the 630T however personally I'd go with something a little more powerful but that's just me.

RAID is unsafe imho and i refuse to put my backup data on HDD's that are in raid i rather have slow hdd's

i still have a Vertex 3 64GB ssd laying around ill put the movies on that and then when im done watching ill put them on the storage drives

also wil put the OS on that

If your not going to use raid then i wouldn't use the RED drives, go for these instead:

http://azerty.nl/8-857-452380/seagate-barracuda-st3000dm001-.html

i also agree with windspeed36 that its not a bad idea to upgrade the cpu, that will be a bigger bang for the buck and its always nice to have some overhead.

maybe raid 5 yes but thats to expansive so raid is a no go

the cpu needs to be very efficient so if there are any other cpu's that have like 35watts max then ill change it but whats a good cpu?

Intel stock coolers do make high pitched coil whines over time i have had this issue with 4 other pc's :/

Let me just jump in and break some myths here:

1) You will never (and I mean NEVER) have a silent system with an SFF PSU. Those small power supplies have small fans which WILL make noise. As Windspeed said before: the stock cooler is more quiet than the fan in that power supply

2) RAID is a VERY safe means of storing data. I honestly can not comprehend your statement about RAID being unsafe.

As for the parts: you'll be better off buying a cheapo standard ATX case and pair it up with a modded Corsair CX PSU[/url=http://linustechtips.com/main/forum/news-reviews-article-guides/guides-and-tutorials/79907-how-to-change-the-fan-of-your-psu]. That'll be cheaper and quieter than the fractal design array r2. Also, if you aren't going to use RAID (which I still don't understand), there is no point in buying Red drives. Save a few bucks and buy Greens instead ;)

modding the psu fan is not going to be a problem :) i already thought of that :D

im going to mount a silent fan to the psu

Red drivers are meant for running 24/7 they where specificly tested and verified for that the barracuda drive isnt and the western digital drives get longer warranty 3 years vs 2 years so i rather go with red drives and it comes with Nas software

about the raid part only raid 5 is safe but isnt that decreasing the size of all ur HDD's by 25%?

and raid 0 = no go neither is raid 1 cause it mirrors only

also i will be waiting until Haswell cpu's come out i heard they will have lower TDP and a way better build in gpu

so for now i have this

btw saying raid overall is safe is a myth itself

raid 0 = unsafe

No point in doing "proper" hardware raid if you want a cheap solution. You will also want a full backup of your system, because RAID is not a substitute for backup.

Maybe something like a Synology NAS box with WD Red drives. That will give you RAID capabilities, and all your storage will be in one place. You can hook that up to your cheap SFF PC which will handle the torrenting.

If you want a single solution, you can run RAID 1,5, or 6 through your motherboard which should be fine, and you can run your torrenting app. This should fit in your case, however you will have limited expansion options if you fill up your case and want more storage space down the line.

Just make sure you have a backup. If your RAID goes down you lose everything.

ill just be replacing the drives with bigger sized drives when i really need the space!

If you are worried about cost, why not give software RAID a go? unRAID, FlexRAID (my fav), ZFS are good options.
ill go with raid 5 and ill put the OS/Download programs on the SSD

once im done watching it ill move it to the HDD that are in raid 5

im wondering tho if there are any programs that can move files to certain directory after a timer has hit 0
