Living in long-distance relationship at the moment. I have a good laptop but 14'' is just too small screen for my eyes in the long run. So I was thinking options when I'm at or going to my girlfriends place. She has older flatscreen TV, but I already determined that it just doesn't support HDMI signal from my laptop. Now I'm open for other solutions. I would rather have something on the cheaper side. With size about 17'' or so.

What I thought about.

  • USB portable screen. Would be good with brightness and contrast, but most seem like too small and too expensive (200+€ for AOC 17'' model).
  • Pocket projector. Cheap-ish, rather small with capabilities for larger image. Problem seems to be poor lumination in daylight/roomlight.
  • Rollable screen. This is something I first thought. Screen with places for connectors. You could roll it for carrying. It could be tranparent and have metal rods acting like frames you could assemble when using. And possibly add piece of paper/cardboard to back if transparency would weaken contrast. Sadly this tech is still 5 years away from consumer markets.

how about just having a screen at her place? or do you want to have it when you travel too?

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Spoiler

Maybe could do that too. But I don't have spare at the moment (and she doesn't need one). I mean I have two at home but I just can't be separated from dual screen.

i would go look around on the used market, i know there are LOADS of 1080p 19" screen for sale here in Sweden, or there were last time i checked for pretty cheap too so that could be a good option

I actually started thinking of that. Could be one option. Need to think bit.

The thing I'm weary about USB screens is do they use the computer's GPU or do they come with some super barebones technically supports VGA chip? Technically USB 3.0 supports FHD just fine, but still.

I have an HDMI based portable monitor from GeChic, but it was stupid expensive at $300. Their options range from 13" and 15" ones, the cheapest I've seen any of their stuff go for is ~$120 or so for a TN 13" 1368x768 monitor.

Well that's out of your size though. I think there are other HDMI portable monitors out there, but they were TN panel from what I recall when I looked around.
