VR Alternative Theory

"Premium VR" as one may call it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqCo0LTUhsE) is expensive and another may call it not worth it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQ0JTkBZdyw).

So, I had an idea. This idea arose because my iPhone is broken, and those-in my opinion-ridiculous pieces of garbage break all the time. So... after this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SOXMDb4cjI) showed up again, and since mobile phones don't have an easy "Official" way, I was considering fusing the video with mobile VR Headset.

Essentially iphone, and other screens come at severely reduced prices compared to headsets, and even come with phones. In addition old phones are widely available, from people that managed to keep their screens in tact.

What do you think? Is this a stupid theory?

The problem is you also need a working gyro sensor so that you can detect the head motion, so its not like an old screen is sufficient you need the rest of the hardware and the processor to have this work.

Even if you solve that issue the problem remains that it requires a specialist screen so as not to loose the contents of your stomach. That is low persistence at 90hz or more with pixel layouts that are not a problem for causing severe screen door effect. I tried a google cardboard (Homido actually) with a Nexus 5X and while it was cool it was extremely laggy and the frame rate was clearly far too low.

When this idea popped in my head I forgot about the need for the gyroscope. Thanks! I was curious to see if there was an alternative just to see. I'm not too interested in VR.

I have a Vive and I don't really disagree with the video there are a lot of bugs and its really missing the content. But if you have a suitable phone you can certainly get a flavour of it with a Google cardboard device (get something better than a cardboard). But it also doesn't really compare because the is so much SDE and low performance on the phone in comparison to an actual headset.

Its cool, its not awesome that is my initial impression.

I have an iphone 5c, and that was cool when I first got my headset (actual good mobile vr headset) but to me it was really boring. Nothing really to do with it. That's just me. I also played 2 indie games on Rift, however they were fun but I want something more which will have to come later. (Probably a PS4 :P)
