- virtualbox

- ubuntu or its derivatives

- if you need to ask this question, you wont be dropping windows any time soon. if you cant figure out what you need to do from the previous two points i dont think linux will be for you all together.

I haven't seen any unsafe ones from trusted distros, but then again I don't go looking for trouble. best thing you can do is install a Linux iso to a usb or disc then run it live without installing so you can EXPERIENCE OUT OF VIRTUALNESS. Which is cool.
