A Pentium would be better now but if he isn't going to upgrade the Fx or the 860k are good

He will be doing some light gaming. Things like CSGO and older titles. He has a good laptop for his engineering programs and such.

If you are in a $80 dollar price range go for an intel g4400 and change to the new socket 1151 which will future proof your friend and to much surprise pentiums run games pretty well now and a lot better than amd's line up until you get into their six core cpus as intel's cores run a lot faster so not having a lot of them is not a big deal when it comes to gaming.

If your friend is a 100% amd fan boy and will not use any processor from intel go with the 860k

but the intel platform is a lot more stable, consumes less power, runs cooler, better performance, future proof.

DO NOT LET THE HIGH FREQUENCIES AND THE TON OF CORES ON AMDS SIDE FALL YOU!!

Hey GreezyJeezy

Used intel cpus: There are no good deals going right now and the only place where there could be good deals is in older 1150 chipsets which would mean that the would be sacrifices made in future proofing and hey not everyone wants a used pc with a processor and cpu that has been used for bit coin mining or whatever else you can stress opus with nowadays. In the used market you have no idea what you are getting and many eBay listings nowadays lie about how long they have used it for just to increase the selling price of the product.

LGA1150 is more 'future proof' then  AM3+ and isn't really old. A CPU is pretty safe to buy used as they have s very long lifespan and don't die to easily. I bought a used 2500k which is working perfectly, was well under $80  and destroys the FX 4350. If the seller lets you test that it works for local meet ups then you have nothing to worry about if you buy a recent CPU such as a i5 44x0 which may be in your price range.
