Hello guys, as the title suggests i have a giant problem. First of all i will familiarise you with my rig. Intel i7 4930k overclocked to 4.0Ghz from 3.4Ghz standard, sitting in a MSI X79A-GD45+ motherboard which is cooled by Corsair H100i GTX. My problem is that even when the pc is idle, fresh startup, no programs on, the cpu temperature rises to around 50-60 degrees celcius, once at idle i saw it being 77degrees celcius. The PC worked fine before i updated to windows 10, im not sure that would cause this. I have had this overclock for over half a year now and no problems occured. This is very weird as I have replaced my thermal paste (zalman stg2)(I have not put too much paste) and the computer worked fine for 3 days reaching 28degrees celcius idling and around 48 under stress test. I am worried as i do not wont to fry my cpu or the motherboard. Any help would be appreciated.

Probably just needed to re-seat your cooler.

So you replaced the TIM, the temps were normal for a few days and then went back to being bad?

Sounds like your cooler isnt mounted properly and gets loose after some time.

I will try remounting the cooler again, Will reply with the results in a few moments.

Hey Im back. I have reapplied the thermal paste and have checked all the fans, remounted the cooler and the temperatures look like they are back down. However this is the exact thing that happened four days ago when i reapplied the thermal paste, I am hoping this time it will not change. Will get back to this thread if anything changes, for now I am attaching the temperatures from today, first launch after reapplying the thermal paste.

Bad pump? Can you verify that your pump is running properly?

The pump is running properly. No issues with it.

I will take off the cpu block and put it back on without removing the thermal paste. Will see what happens. Going to do that in 3 hours. Will get back on this one.

Any further suggestions would be appreciated.

NO NO NO, always replace the thermal paste otherwise you could get air pockets and get the issue you are seeing.

Im back. I have just unscrewed the cpu block, didnt even lift it off, and screwed it back on. While unscrewing the fittings were tight, not loose atall. I've put it back together and the tempereatures are back to normal. 28degrees idle. I am now confused fully. The fittings were not loose, but just unscrewing it and putting it back together fixed it... I am clueless once again.

Could the CPU be having temp sensor issues? Try different load testing programs. Clean out dust that could be in the rads.

If that doesnt work... Im outta ideas.

Check your Vcore, and lower it by offset in BIOS.
Just "-0,05V" should do the trick.

1.344v on the VCORE is pretty radical from stock. is that MSI auto clocking or your overclocking?

under your power options are you in the 'balanced' mode or the 'performance' mode?

But shouldnt it be fine on the cooler he has? And if its running fine for a bit after he reseats the cooler it should be fine at 1.344

Oh and check for driver updates

Try using other monitoring software such as CPUID HWM and also check if restarting your computer fixes it. It sounds like it's either a software issue or faulty mounting hardware at this point.
