i5 3335s vs i3 4170. which one is best?

U are comparing 3 different gens of CPUs. If u are planning on getting new mobo+CPU just tell us your maximum budget and we can pick the best for you.

U can get brand new i5 or used one with better performance for less money (probably Haswell refresh, no point going back to sandy/ivy bridge).

You could ask him to do a benchmark or look up results for 2400 and 3335s (can be hard to find, it's not as common)

Quick googling resulted in very similar performance between 2400 and 3335s.  I'm sure if I did a deeper one it would continue with same results.

okay cool. its coming out of a dead mac (it will probs be fine as we found one of the ram chips was dead so that likely was it) so no benchmark lol.

so it looks like (in multi-threaded workloads):

2400 is 23% better than the 4170

2400 is 6% better than the 3335s
