I decided to underclock my system to something somewhat similar to my original clocking rig.  I went to single core no HT with memory at 800mhz.  I first ran an AMD Athlon 2800+ at 14x222 cas2.  I figure all of the other advancements will somewhat help cancel out the newer requirements of software.  I decided to play the intro to HL2.  I have to say the horrible loading screen's with occasional lag and artifact's brought me back if even for a little bit.  Give it a try and see what you think.

hmmm, would be interesting to see what my q9550 and gtx 580 were like compared to my 4790k and 2x gtx 980

I would imagine that gpu downclocking would be next to impossible.  But I did find that in Half Life the loading screens inbetween were rather slow and other aspects were entertaining.  There is literally no way I could downclock my gpu to match my 4 pixel pipeline 960pro.  So I just left that as is.  Still it reminded me what it was like to have a game that sat there for a while while I questioned if my clock would work and kept me guessing if I had made improvements that would make it faster.  Now day's an overclock is along the lines of...... fast.... or fast....  Back then I could see immediate changes in my computers operation.

I loved my X2 3800+ at the time but I have no desire to go back there after 10 years of progress :P

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

lol, I wish I had one of those Athlon64's at the time.  I was stuck with a generation's old cpu and I had an Athlon 2800+ barton core.  But I tell you this, I slayed every other barton on the forums.  I simply couldn't touch the 64's fsb esp cause I had generic mushkin ram, but I did a whole hell of a lot with the hardware that I had.  I even tried a DFI infinity and did in fact get better fsb but it wasn't enough to stand up to my abit in raw ghz.  Never got my hands on a lanparty though.  I did find that even with the infinity that the wide array of timing's was more than I could put in my head.  I was extremely thorough in those day's and even that was to much to know closely.

I didn't know too much at the time and just overclocked it to 2.7 GHz on the stock cooler.  It just barely handled it with a little instability but it worked :P

yeah, I disabled SLI and downclocked as far as I could (899 core, 6624 mem) and I still doubled my old 580's  FS graphics score using the same cpu

edit; unfortunately never got into overclocking until about a year ago but I have seen that it definitely isn't quite what it used to be!

back in those day's I had some major mental health issues.  I was at the start of major schizophrenia set off by drug's.  So I hid in my parent's basement and spent every waking hour tweaking and testing my rig. I found that given enough hours and attention that you could squeeze so much out of a rig.  It has been many years since then and I have built a couple machines since, none of them got the same attention.  I have found that with this new machine I'm not afraid of giving it time because even if I spend my off time testing while browsing, it is nothing like what I used to go through.  I guess I simply got really good at working with a computer in those years.
