You can avoid it, if you just dont use RAID You have a JBOD.

U can have both :)
RAID on some disks, and non-RAID on others (if you have 3+ drives).

Basicly : RAID isn't required for second, third, fourth, etc. drive to work.
U can simply connect them, and use in IDE/AHCI mode - no problem.
