I unfortunately live in an area where road star (sat internet ) is my only option in internet services. I am paying $99 for 18mbps down and 10mbps up ,but I only seem to get 1 to 5mbps down and 1mbps up at best. Anyone have any tips for increasing my speeds? Also I am plunged in through Ethernet so that's not a problem.

Restart your router(s) and computer that you're testing with.

Connect directly to the ISP router with Ethernet (instead of through WIFI or something)

If you still have issues, contact your ISP, if you complain they might be able to fix it or even upgrade your service (don't count on that last thing too much though ;) )

Honestly if I were you I would just call them up once to complain about the speeds and after that just yell at the router for a few minutes each day and hope you feel better. It really sucks but when there's no alternative you don't want to piss off your only ISP. I guess another option is to lower you plan closer to the speeds you're actually getting to save money.

In the UK, our ISPs have to abide by an OFCOM Code of Practise. (I know, I work for one of them).

We have to provide each customer with an Estimated Access Line Speed and a Minimum Access Line Speed (EALS and MALS).

EALS is a suggestion, MALS is a promise. MALS is usually about 30% less than the EALS. I'd expect your MALS to be above 12Mbps but I don't have enough info here to go by.

It seems like you have a slow connection, but try logging onto your Router Settings Page to double check. A quick google should help you log onto your RSP and find the speed.
