Exernal HDD on 24/7?

Guys is it safe to have an external hdd plugged into my laptop all day at times?. Its a USB 3.0, so fairly new but I wanted to know is this a no no or OK to do?.

Stupid question but having it on all the time would heat be an issue and cause damage?.

Thanks guys, realize it maybe a better idea to get an external HDD than a SSD.

 

Also would it be OK to install steam guys on the external HDD and run it from there?.

Maybe a bit late, but might as well link you to it. This would be about the experience you would receive when gaming from a usb 3.0 port when using an external ssd. (Yes, an usb is technically a ssd)
