VPN Questions For Assignment

I have to teach the class about VPNs and I am graded on how well the students due that take the test after I give my speech. So some questions I have and some key points I would like to highlight on. 

Free VPNs: Is it true some, not all, just farm your data and sell it? The big providers in nobody knows china. 

Paid VPNs: Why should I pay when it is free. How do I know they aren't stealing my data.

What is a VPN: Virtual Private Network, ezpz

Is it safe: I know it adds a layer on top of HTTPS or whatever the site uses. So if the FBI came to the company they could see right through it.

Why does it unblock sites: Filters like LightSpeed at schools can't see any of the traffic so they can't filter it.

Why is it slow: It is based off a network probably far away in germany or china

Why do I have random ads: Gotta make money somehow, other then selling your data

Can the NSA see me: Yes right through them.

Can someone on my network see me: Yes if the VPN is really bad

Can I make my own VPN: Yes it is actually very easy and allows for better security.

Just keeping this here as a Examples of practical uses:

  • Internet privacy via paid or free service.
  • Bypassing geoblocking for accessing content restricted to certain regions i.e. accessing full Netflix library, government restrictions to specific websites (such as China)
  • Connecting to work network (i.e. from home) to be able to work from home while accessing your company PC or associated networked resources.
  • Connecting to home network from work, friends house or while travelling.

Probably useful to talk about the different protocols and what some basic differences are.

Unprotected WiFi networks / untrusted networks: A VPN is a good solution to use if you do not trust the network you connect to, like public wifi or hotel/cafe/airport wifi.

Free / Paid VPN: You are never safe, you never know if they are harvesting your data - that goes for every provider, free and paid. Using a VPN that is not connected to a network you manage and trust is a risk and based on trust. It is more unlikely that a big paid provider will harvest and sell your data, but you never know.

ComCast has been known to spy on its customers, intercept HTTP traffic and replace ad network IPs with their own and Verizon have taken it to the next level of creepyness with this patent: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2244116/The-creepy-cable-box-detect-youre-cuddling-sofa-advert-condoms-automatically.html 

(and that is a long time ago, god knows what they are up to now a days)

Using the internet is based on trust in general - we trust that our ISPs are delivering access to the internet and only that and we trust that the packets we send will be recieved by the recipient without tampering, but that is not always the case.

Some countries have a lesser moral than other when it comes to net neutrality and fewer regulations so it would be wise to use a VPN to a network you trust or you trust more than the network you are on.

Is it safe: Depends on the protocol and encryption you are using and if the client and server is fully patched.  L2TP can be set up with no encryption and is therefore not secure in any way, it will only tunnel traffic.It is actually below the HTTPS protocol in the OSI model. VPNs are either Layer 2 or Layer 3. HTTPS is Layer 7.

Why do i have random ads: Most webpages uses ad networks that analyses your surfing pattern and uses your geo location to serve you the best ads possible for them, so if you connect to a VPN with an IP that other people have been using alot for surfing for something, you will get more hits of that thing and also you will get ads from the country / region you VPN to. Also Free VPN providers will have to pay for stuff in some way, so they might change the known ad network IPs with their own ad serving network.

Why is it slow: That is actually only part of the reason. Your ISP is most likely using BGP to connect to its peers and they are (or should be) doing some internal routing to make sure that your data is taking the shortest, fastest and least congested route to its destination. 

When you use a VPN, you tell your internet traffic to move to a different location, which will force your ISP to route the traffic in a different way.

Depending on your CPU and the encryption used, you will suffer some speed when encrypting and decrypting packets.

The VPN provider you connect to, can have a slower connection to the internet than you or share it with multiple users, so you essentially divide a 100mbit (for example) connection in X users giving each user Y mbit browse the internet with.

The VPN providers VPN concentrator/server can be saturated with connections from multiple users and the hardware cannot keep up encrypting and decrypting packets on their end.

And if you connect to a VPN server in another country, the traffic has to move through that country, which will take a bit longer and your traffic might end up using a saturated path on the way there or back or be subject to faulty hardware etc.
